The Jam
Everyone’s heard of The Jam I’m sure, the British punk rock/new wave/mod revival band fronted by none other than Mr Paul Weller. Formed in 1972, the band worked hard to hone their sound until in 1977, they were ready to take on the world – and what an impact they had! Talk about The Jam and immediately thoughts of The Eton Rifles, English Rose and Life From A Window all come about along with images of modded scooters, suits, and furry collared anoraks. As a major influence on music across the world during their time, and as a launch pad for the careers of the various members, The Jam are undoubtedly a band who will spoken of for many, many years to come.
In order to celebrate the career of The Jam, Universal Music released their entire collection of classic albums, all in one box! Packaged as individual vinyl-replica CD’s with slipcases, this collection features:
In The City – 1977
This Is The Modern World - 1977
All Mod Cons – 1978
Setting Sons – 1979
Sound Affects – 1980
The Gift – 1982
This collection not only covers the entire history of the band, but also marks the anniversary of the bands split in 1982 whilst still at the pinnacle of their career. Unbelievably, despite their short time together, The Jam managed to have 18 consecutive Top 40 singles which included 4 number 1’s – which by anyone’s standards is quite an achievement.
Listening through these albums it’s impossible to resist the charm of early Jam right up to their later stuff. The tones of Weller still manage to pack a punch, even after 30 years whilst the punk influenced guitar and drum work still manages to get you moving. The songs sound just as fresh as they did in the first place, offering up the chance to listen to all of their classic releases back to back, almost like working through a history lesson on where modern music came from. Track after track flows out of the speakers, from Set The House Ablaze onto That’s Entertainment, the tracks still harking back to the glory days of punk and showing why it is we still group The Jam within that bracket, despite them technically not being a punk band.
Throughout these albums we’re treated to music which brings back memories, music which has made a difference, and music which is real. The fanatical followers of The Jam are sure to jump at the chance of getting their hands on this collection, but I think it spans much more of an audience than simply them. If you like music, whether it be rock or pop, listening to these albums will show you the provenance of the music, showing where it came from and how it developed. This is a collection that won’t just sit on the shelf along side your other CD’s, this is a collection that will be played over and over again.
Definitely one to make sure you check out HERE to find out more.
