The Moody Blues - Timeless Flight
When we were first contacted about The Moody Blues and their new boxed set, I was like a kid in a sweet shop, chomping at the bit to get my hands on a copy so I could be transported back to my childhood. You see, whilst growing up, my parents always had music on in the house, whether it was the radio playing in the kitchen, their vinyl records playing on an afternoon, music in the car, it was everywhere. I grew up to the sounds of The Beatles, Dire Straits, Europe (hell yeah Europe) and perhaps most memorably, The Moody Blues. My Mum was (is) a huge Moody Blues fan so throughout my childhood I heard their records, their singles, and rapidly built a respect for a band who realistically, started the world of progressive rock that we see today.
The new boxed set, Timeless Flight, is without a doubt the most comprehensive collection put together of The Moody Blues to date – I mean if you look through the details below, you’ll see that no stone has been left unturned, no track left out, presenting fans with the ultimate collection of music, history, and legacy. Still touring now, The Moody Blues are a band that we should all look up to so that we realise how much of an impact they have had on the world of music as we see it, so what of the boxed set on offer?
There’s no mistaking tracks like Knights In White Satin as simply, it’s a timeless classic. From catchy moments through to moments which demonstrate the musical ability within the group, it’s almost a time stamp from the past, showing how able and creative bands were in that era, and how impressive their music really was. Add in moments like Tuesday Afternoon and Gypsy and it’s impossible to deny the influence of these guys. Soft vocals, perfectly balanced rhythms and catchy melodies, the ‘pop’ aspect to The Moody Blues is what made them so popular (and continues to do so), whilst the progressive and unpredictable nature of the tracks keeps things alive and interesting throughout, showing how to perfectly combine the two into a mix that’s sure to captivate everyone who hears it.
Track after track seems to flow out of the speakers as the album progresses, from classic moments such as Forever Autumn – a track which is sure to sit you back and get you thinking from the word go, and examples of their live prowess on tracks like Running Water (live from the LA Forum 1983), showing once again how timeless their sound is. Regardless of whether you grew up listening to the band, or whether you’ve only heard one or two tracks, this new boxed set promises to provide you with the complete works, showcasing their music, their style, and cementing once and for all their influence in the world of music.
With a UK tour and this boxed set, The Moody Blues aren’t showing any signs of slowing down at the moment, and I for one am overjoyed that they’re still going. The music within this boxed set isn’t just something to put on in the background and half listen to, it’s music to embrace, music which will change you emotionally, and music which showcases an era when the key was pushing the boundaries of it all. There’s simply no discussion needed here, this boxed set is phenomenal, and one which I need to get my hands on.

As a band who took music and turned it on its head back in the 1960's, taking the established sound that was in existence at the time, and laying the roots for rock, metal and even progressive metal to follow on from them. In an era which gave us Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, The Moody Blues were perhaps on the softer side of things in their time, but their contribution to music can't simply be dismissed as quite simply, they inspired a generation.
Still on the road now, the band has gone through their fair share of line up changes and issues, but throughout it all have continued to push the boundaries of music, melody and the sorts of elements that you'd expect to come across on a track. Continuing to release albums through the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's, The Moody Blues are without a doubt one of those bands that we've all come across, all know, and all have a track we love.
We'll be bringing you more information on the boxed set once we get our grubby little mits on a copy, but in the meantime try to get out to one of their live shows this June to see the band for yourself. Dates are:
