The Siren Tower
3 piece Perth Band The Siren Tower are Grant McCulloch – Guitar and Vocals, Brody Simpson – Drums and Vocals and Mark McEwen – Guitars, Percussion and Vocals. Described as Acoustic/electric indie rock roots.
The Siren Tower have been busily touring Australia promoting the release of their debut album ‘A History of Houses’ I caught up with the guys in their hometown Perth at Amplifier Bar on Friday 15th June.
The guys hit the stage and performed for nearly an hour to a capacity audience. Joining them on stage is Anthony Jackson (formally of Birds of Tokyo) on Bass and Brandon David on Guitar and Keys. These well established additional musicians have made consistent appearances with the band lately.
The Siren Tower had the privilege of supporting the very last Butterfly Effect show last week at Melbourne’s HIFI Bar. Even though I have been promised a copy of ‘A History of Houses’ the first thing I did was purchase my own signed copy of this beautifully presented CD. Incased in a paper back book, the pages are graced with sepia images and hand written descriptions. Song Lyrics and meanings, a collection piece music lovers. The book itself explains the motivation behind the album and gives you an insight into the creator’s inspirations. Australian producer Forrester Savell has made an impact on this production by co-producing with the band, as well as engineering and mixing on the album.
The Siren Tower are original and Australian through and through. I define Australian as persons who represent the core of this countries originality, it’s heat, heart and history, it’s attitude, its blended cultures, , dusty and unpretentious. Grant has a voice that is mature beyond his years. When he sings, you really haven’t heard anything like him, the depth of character and quality in his vocals are complimented perfectly by the equally talented vocals of Brody and Mark. They play as one, tight, polished and energetic performers. The class of musical material that should represent our country overseas. Solid and unique to our counties true progression.
Stand out track during their performance were ‘The Banishing of William McGuiness’ a tune that always sounds better live, as it should be. It has melody and balls. Lyrical content is inspired and intelligent, it’s personal with a bigger message. ‘Floods’ written over a year ago is another tune that catches your attention musically before you really listen to its message. Grant has reached into his soul to produce these words. ‘All Things Will Change’ was released last year, gained notoriety on YouTube when performed acoustically by the band. Pure and simple, yet so outstanding you cannot forget it. The masterpiece ‘I Could Tell Your Things That Will Break Your Heart’ has the desired effect, and emotionally charged epic tune with lyrics that melt you. It is my personal favorite track by The Siren Tower.
During the show the audience seemed familiar with the Band and the material so I am sure most were Siren Tower fans already. I strongly recommend this album and seeing the band. They will give you a class musical experience and material you will want to own and hear more of. To some they may be an acquired taste, like a quality wine, only those with a discerning palette will appreciate them fully.
