The Sun Explodes - Emergence
We were recently contacted by Carlisle based ‘The Sun Explodes’ who were kind enough to send us a copy of their 9 track album 'Emergence'. After listening to it a couple of times we figured we should probably share our thoughts with you lot out there!
When ‘The Sun Explodes’ first contacted us with a video, I had a listen and was immediately blown away by the contrasts which they’ve got in their music. The album is exactly the same with some tracks featuring a lot of synth and effects and others relying on pure power, the result is something pretty special.
The album opens with ‘Emergence’, a track which builds up from picked guitars into an almost gothic sound once it kicks off. The synth plays quite a heavy part in this track but gives an electronic edge to the song making it really stand out from other bands I’ve listened to. ‘Honour Bound’ changes this at first with a faster, heavier introduction (reminiscent of System of a Down BYOB at times) but still maintaining that electronic edge as the track progresses. What really stands out here is the vocals – they’re clean which provides a real contrast against the rest of the background.
Track 3, ‘Second Sight’ adds a whole new angle to the album, once again being faster and heavier but this time building up to one hell of a guitar solo – the guitarist in me wanted to grab the PRS off of the wall and commence shredding along with it! This track is the one which I have revisited a few times since, it’s catchy yet heavy yet somehow clean – it’s a really good combination.
‘Resplendence’ shows off the bands softer side and adds a new emotional outlook to the album. The powerful lyrics and emotional tempo make this song a bit of a break from the precedent set so far but again, it works. As it finishes though, ‘We’re Not Soldiers’ grabs you by the throat with a roar of ‘this is the end’ and launches full tilt forwards, much heavier once again with riffs and solid drumming pushing the track onwards.
As the album reaches its conclusion, final track ‘Dead_Alive’ finishes on an epic scale. The track finishes with choral backgrounds, guitars, synths, drums, vocals – I didn’t know which part to listen to there was so much going on, but it really leaves you wanting to hear more from these guys.
Listening to this album, at times I thought about Muse, at times Incubus, but it’s unfair to draw comparison. This band have produced an album which is edgy in its own right, combining some snarly vocals with others which are incredibly clean and some almost Judas Priest like screams. The sound of The Sun Explodes is unique and will catch you off guard at first listen (as it did with me) but as each track progresses you begin to understand it a bit more.
Give this a chance to let it grow on you and you won’t be disappointed.
