Thunderfuck and the Deadly Romantics
We recently got the EP, Starfucker (a sample off of their forthcoming album Sexploitation, through from Thuderfuck and the Deadly Romantics, a band described as ‘dirrty rock and roll’ who are out with a mission to forge onto new lands and fear no evil as the power of the satanic sisters fall at their feet - fair play! With an EP cover straight out of a porn flick, and a name which suggests more than enough, this is a band who are insane beyond contempt who force the oppressed to feel their power – so I figured that the best way forwards was to crank the CD on and check it out for myself!
Opening with title track Starfucker it’s clear from the off that this is some serious in your face rock n roll! Heavy guitars work with a pounding rhythm section and soaring lead line to craft a sound that’s sure to get crowds pumping. Harking back to the glory days of proper sleaze rock, the track hurtles along at break neck speed, grabbing your attention from the off and reminding you how awesome old school rock can sound. Catchy, upbeat and powerful, this is a track that’s sure to work its way into your mind, get you singing along and joining in, and get you down to a show to check them out. Hints of punk creep through the mix as it grows, resulting in a sound that’s more raw than a lot of sleaze rock and more powerful than old school punk – a clever mix indeed. As an opening track, this does what it should and gets you involved, getting you wanting more whilst thoroughly enjoying every second of what you’re hearing.
Porn Star continues this approach in the same manner, opening with sound effects fitted to the title of the track but accompanied by some serious rock madness. Fast paced vocals work with the hammering guitars to form a sound that’s fast, powerful, heavy and raw. The vocals are the key here, grabbing you by the eyeballs and thrusting (no pun intended!) deep into the mix. Another track which is going to work well on the live scene, if you’re not wanting to get down to a show by the time you’ve heard this track then there’s something wrong with you! Even throwing in a solo of epic proportions just to make sure you’re still there, this one stands out as a serious high point for sure. Fucked By Rock and Roll returns us to a more conventional rock n roll style track, kicking into steady paced guitars accompanied by solid, gravelly vocals designed to get you singing along. The raw edge to this track is the key here, grabbing your attention and getting you chanting along to ‘you’ve been fucked by rock n roll’ within seconds – make sure you get on and check this one out if you get a chance.
Closing with a cover of Def Leppard classic Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad we’re left on an almost punk cover style note. Taking a ballad and turning it into a fist pumping rock track, the final moments might not belong to the band, but they’ll have you singing along and reaching for that volume up button within moments.
Any band who have got the guts to call themselves Thunderfuck and the Deadly Romantics, and release a track called Starfucker are ok in my books! What you’ve got here though is a band who can play, understand their songs, but have set out with a mission to bring old school, dirty, sleazy rock and roll back to the forefront of things – and it’s worked. Definitely a band I’ll be wanting to see live just to fully experience everything, get on and check them out.
