Today They Are Older
We were recently contacted by Jamie from Twisted Records to let us know about a new signing, Today They Are Older. The band are described as a progressive metal act and have just released their EP, Universal, through all major download sites. Due to be recording their debut album later on this year, I figured I’d best get on and check out what was on offer before I lost my chance and they got too big!
The smooth yet dark introduction to Outcomes immediately grabs you as the EP begins, suggesting that the music that follows is going to be inspiring and uplifting, initiating a sense of eagerness within you to make you look forward to how they’re going to follow the serene opening moments. Soft and soothing vocals lead on, adding in a new dimension to the track and building the tension even further, almost daring you to keep listening without giving away what’s going to come next. Hinting at the guitar line through a faded distorted line, the track seems to almost build around you, engulfing you as it grows and not letting you out, keeping you involved and keeping you listening, until all of a sudden, it drops. Powerful, massive, loud and distorted, yet firmly based around melody, this intro track is mind blowing as it grows, almost leading into the tracks which follow as a showcase of what is to come without giving too much away.
Any Sign Of Life follows on, coming as a shock initially after the soft opening moments of the EP but launching you head first into a distorted pit, still based around melody and keeping everything verging on the inspiring, yet adding in a new dimension of raw power to demonstrate the more metal roots of the band. Differing time signatures, heavy guitars, raw vocals, powerful drumming and thundering bass lines – they’re all here and all working together to craft the over all sound of the band, creating a sound which keeps you guessing as to what twist or turn is going to come up next. Building up to the crescendo of the track, the ending once again returns us to an almost atmospheric level, adding in further senses of melody, almost creating a musical version of standing on top of a mountain and seeing everything laid out before you.
Closing with Anger Is More Useful Than Despair there’s another twist left up the bands sleeve, throwing into a firmly progressive track full of changing timings, hammering guitars and faster paced vocals. More upbeat than before, yet still full of power throughout, this final hurrah on the album almost seems to showcase what it is the band can do, showing off their style and leaving you with a taste for the band, wanting to know how they’re going to follow it but knowing that what ever it is, it’s going to be good.
Today They Are Older have got a bright future ahead of them, their music is both uplifting and raw, somehow managing to combine a serious dose of heaviness with a firm understanding of melody and rhythm. Throughout the EP you’re reminded of their prog roots without having them thrown in your face, always hinting at more but never going over the top. In all, I can’t wait to see how they follow this, their album is going to be a must hear!
