Transcending The Flesh
We were recently contacted by the guys from Transcending The Flesh, a 4 piece unsigned Deathcore band from Thanet in the UK. Having already shared the stage with the likes of Chimaira, Under Godless Skies and Revoker, these guys seem to be headed towards achieving domination of the deathcore market in the UK – so we thought we’d better see what all the fuss was about. Checking out their self-titled album on their Bandcamp page, I hit play and prepared myself for what was about to happen!
Opening with Shipwrecked, one thing becomes very clear from the off – there’s not going to be any messing about here! Launching from the fade in straight into a melee of rolling drums, hammering guitar lines an guttural roaring you’re immediately thrust into a pit of all out aggression, it’s a heavy mix and one which is going to come as a shock if you’re not prepared for it. Alternating the pace between all out hammering sections and more broken down, slower sections, you end up with a mix running through the track which allows you to envisage how this would be received on the live scene, people are going to go mental when they hear this. Surprisingly, there’s something catchy about this track despite the heaviness, it’s got the sort of progression which is going to hook you in and keep you listening throughout.
Leading on to Consumed By Hate there’s no give in the assault, once again launching straight into a piece of deathcore designed to blow your mind out of the back of your head, the heavy mix once again latching onto you and not letting go. The pace of this track is sure to get live crowds circling and baying for blood, once again throwing in break downs just to make sure the heaviness is fully accentuated. Eternal Suffering follows on and once again demonstrates why it is that you need to listen to this band, launching you head first into a pit and forcing you to stay in there until the band deems it safe for you to come out. Alternating between fast and slow once again, this is a track which stands out as a serious highpoint on the album, a moment which is going to remove any doubts you might have had and convert you to the ways of Transcending the Flesh. I particularly like the way the guitar roves around on this track, it adds a further sense of intrigue to the track which makes you want to know what’s going to come next.
What comes next is This Is The End, another track which I would class as a serious highpoint on the album as a whole. Demonstrating that when they go all out, they go all out, this track will leave you breathless and questioning whether you can continue listening to the rest of the album. As heavy as they come, this is one hell of a track, full to the brim with hammering drum lines, layered vocals and distorted guitar lines, all backed up by a dark and ominous bass line which will shake you down to the pit of your stomach. Revolution continues the idea of throwing everything into a pot and seeing what comes out, once again launching you into a track which is insanely powerful from the off and doesn’t hold off until the moment it comes to a close. Personally, this is my own favourite from the album, there’s just something about the way it’s put together which I really like, and have to get out on the live scene to witness for myself! To Feel Like Charlie Sheen (ft Ollie Ross and Dave Osborne of Foreboding Ether follows on and somehow manages to raise the heaviness to a whole new level, the different levels of vocals all combining to back each other up and form a mix which is not only heavy, but also funky in some elements and catchy in others – a mix which is nigh on impossible to achieve yet they’ve managed it here.
Closing with Before They Rise there’s one last chance to witness just how heavy a band can be when they set their mind to it, once again launching onwards at blistering speeds and not allowing you a moment to question what’s going on. Adding in some serious drumming and guitar work throughout this track, this may be the closing track on the album but it opens up the door for what ever is going to come next – and I’ve got a feeling that it’s going to be insane.
Transcending The Flesh may well be heavy, but it would be wrong to simply leave it with that statement as there’s far more to the music. From intricate guitar and bass work through to different levels of roaring and screaming there’s always something different coming through the mix, resulting in something which isn’t just a load of aggression whacked on a record, but instead holds surprises to keep you guessing and wanting to know more. This album stands out to me as one of the heavier we featured, but also one of the most well written and considered selection of tracks I’ve come across within this genre. If I were you, I’d be out there checking these guys out as soon as I could!
