Trial And Error
We were recently contacted by Brad of Montgomery/Upper Dublin/Plymouth Meeting area (hey….I’ve got no idea as that’s on the other side of a big bit of water called The Atlantic…so it’s a long way away and I was always shit at Geography!) based Trial and Error, to see what we thought. Immediately getting my attention with their statement that they ‘drive around, play music, drive around, eat pizza, play basketball, play music, go to shows, go home’, I figured that since they were living a lifestyle which I only dream of (since you ask mine is ‘drive to work, work, drive home from work, work, go to sleep, wake up, drive to work, work, drive home from work, work, go to sleep, wake up….you get the idea yeah!), I should probably check out their latest offering to see what I thought of things. Brad was kind enough to chuck me over a copy of Diagnose Me Doctor to see what I thought of things.
Opening with a melodic guitar line to get things moving, there’s an immediate sense of reflection and uplifting music, and then the track breaks! Moving away from the soft moments which opened the track and launching us into a melee of hammering guitar lines, pounding drumlins and enough riffs to keep even the most serious metal head occupied, this is a track which gets off to a start that you know is going to work well on the live scene. The vocals are a little high in the mix, but work with the raucous backing track to demonstrate the sort of sound we can expect to hear from the band when they’ve got an album under their belts. Despite the mix, it’s clear that this is a track which is going to hold a hell of a lot of catchy power once it’s done – it’s the sort of thing which is going to get crowds singing along, people going to gigs and moving along to the rhythms of the band from the off. What you’ve got here is the bare bones of a track which, with some work, could well prove to be one hell of a track – this is one I look forward to hearing when it’s completely finished and done!
There’s a lot of potential with Trial and Error I think, although this is only one track mind! There’s clearly talent within the band, so my advice to them would be to find a studio with an engineer and producer who know what they’re doing, and see what sound they can come up with when things are properly layered, mixed down and levelled out. Having said that, the rough and raw quality of this recording make it stand out as the sort of thing which, personally, I’d keep hold of as an extra track on a later album – but in summary – I’d recommend keeping an eye on these guys to see what comes next!
