Vegas Assault
We featured Vegas Assault a while back, so when they dropped us a line about their album, What Goes Around, we jumped at the chance to hear what they had come up with. Available to download from their bandcamp page, Vegas Assault have crafted an 8 track album described as experimental groove hard rock – which to me sounds pretty damned good!
Down gets things going and immediately shows off the groove elements of the bands sound, opening with a funky bass line to back up the slowly progressing music. Launching into a hard hitting rock track whilst still keeping a sense of funk running through things, this is a track which is going to get live crowds moving and venues pumping from the off. The vocals soar over everything whilst the hammering guitar work keeps a sense of dark distortion running through things, the whole track forming a sound which is aggressive and hard yet well-crafted and put together. Dance Of The Black Squid continues the sludgy bass approach of the album so far, this time layering it with some lead snippets and a slow yet hammering drum beat. The sound here is going to get fists in the air, heads banging and a real sense of real rock flowing, it’s hard rock tinged with heavier approaches which are going to work for a hell of a lot of people.
To Be Me is a real highpoint on the album, from the initial opening moments of heavy riffs and bass through to the gravelly and heavy vocals which are spat out over the top. The track itself seems to be faster in some elements, once again getting you moving and making you want to reach for that volume up button until the bass is rumbling your rib cage. Catchy in some elements, this is one of my personal favourite tracks from the album and one which I think a lot of people are going to want to see played live, myself included. Party Spray continues this idea, once again crafting a track which seems to be built for the live scene from the word go. Heavy and slow combined with different levels of vocals create a sound which echoes around the room, making you listen harder and harder to make sure you don’t miss a single moment. Another high point on the album, the album so far hasn’t disappointed in any elements! Even the moments of Interlude (which I half expected to be a break) continue to display the various skills of the band, showing that they can craft tracks which are heavy and hard hitting, as well as tracks which are darker and more removed from reality. Interlude is exactly this sort of track, crafting a sound which you can’t help but be pulled into , just to hear everything and feel it flow over you.
Who Knows? soon returns us to the sludgy and dark sound which made this album stand out so much from the off. Slower and once again heavy, this is another track which is full to the brim with elements to get you moving, even if only to bang your head in recognition of their efforts. My only complaint with this track is that the vocals seem to be too high in the mix, at times causing everything else to fade out, but as a whole it works. Marshmallow soon puts pay to any negative thoughts I had about levelling or similar, once again launching into a 90’s esque melee of hammering riffs, sludgy bass lines and soaring vocal lines. Catchy yet dark and removed, this is a track which airs on the weirder side of rock and metal, yet works to engage you somehow, this is a moment to make sure you check out on the album for sure. As the closing moments of JV are upon us, the sense of all out rock and roll return to the forefront and we’re left on a serious high. Treble heavy guitars lead the way into the track whilst the drums build up to its opening, creating a sound full to the brim with distorted fun and funk, getting you moving and making you love every second of it.
Vegas Assault have crafted an album here which is going to happily sit along side bands of much greater stature, giving you moments which you’re going to love and tracks which you’ll return to time and time again. There’s bound to be slight issues on albums but I think it’s part of the charm here, showing you what this band actually sound like rather than relying on cleaning everything up with digital effects. What I’ve been left thinking is really two fold –
1). How are they going to follow this?
2). When can I get some more?
