Vintage Burning
Vintage Burning describe their sound as Hard Rock, Metal and Hardcore all rolled into one. Stemming from Beloit this 5 piece got in touch about their music so we could get a review up and posted for them. What stands them apart from several of the other bands which we’ve featured recently though is that these guys have a female lead singer.
Hypocrite opens and immediately you’re tossed headfirst into a mash up of roaring vocals and distorted guitars all backed by some seriously pounding guitars and stunning bass lines. Keeping things relatively soft to break into the track, gradually this track builds into one hell of an ass kicking in the chorus featuring those roared vocals of ‘hypocrite’, it’s something pretty spectacular to behold. Melodic despite the heaviness, this track has an almost funky edge which continues to power the track onwards and keep you listening to it. Chunky guitars and pounding drums keep everything powerful right up to the final second leaving no doubt in your mind that these guys are here to be heard.
Status Quo continues this roaring approach and powers straight onwards. Opening with an almost Coal Chamber-esque guitar line before moving into some haunting vocals over rolling drums, this track immediately sucks you in and forces you to pay attention. Spitting the vocals in an almost RATM style at first, this changes into far more melodic singing whilst all the time keeping those guitars and drums solidly in the forefront of what’s going on. This track is almost hypnotic as it progresses, always keeping you on your toes to find out what’s going to come next. As Show Us kicks in though everything changes into a more stereotypical hard rock track. The guitars take on an almost funky edge and the vocals take the lead over the track. What’s really striking throughout all of these tracks is that the bass line is right there in the mix the whole time meaning there’s far more depth than you often get with bands. Launching into an anthemic chorus this track has all the qualities you’d expect from a band signed to a major label yet holds onto their original and raw sound.
Final track Merry Go Frown closes things in excellent style. Opening with chilling childrens vocals over distorted guitars and a pounding drum beat, this track immediately launches you back into those heavy riffs which were so prominent in the first track. The vocals roar out at you forcing you to turn the volume ever up so that you don’t miss a single second of what’s going on. Heavy and raw to the end this track will make you want to go back to the start all over again and listen to what you’ve just heard all over again. The chorus is once again catchy, melodic and somehow incredibly raw and emotional all at once, it’s a triumph.
Vintage Burning have been one of those bands who have surprised me. As I hit play I didn’t really know what to expect, but what I found was a band who are staying true to themselves and their music and as such, producing music which isn’t aimed at the mass market, but aimed instead at people who appreciate what real music is. Signed to Warner, I think we’re going to be seeing these guys over on these shores pretty darned soon!
