VoxPossible
Instrumental dance rock quartet VoxPossible recently got in touch to let us know about their debut single, Eyes For The Boys/Big Boy Beastie which is set for release in April of this year. What struck me most about these guys from the off was their description – instrumental dance rock. Openly describing their style as ‘confusing’ on their Facebook page and simply saying that they play ‘instrumental, hard-rock dancey music’, I figured this was going to be one hell of an interesting ride! Based out of Ireland and due to be gigging in Cork, Limerick, Galway, Dublin and May across April, May and June, this could well be a band which you need to get out there and check out.
Eyes For The Boys doesn’t give a lot of relief to the confusion to be honest, opening with a pounding drum and rumbling bass line before ushering in a lead line, the mix forming something which you can well imagine people moving along to in the sweat filled club. Adopting a style which is verging on the heavy, but not quite achieving it through the more upbeat dance style beat which is backing everything up, this is indeed confusing, but it’s quite good. Throwing into a chorus section which is bound to have people moving along, there’s no real need for vocals across the tracks as the music does all of the talking which is needed, forming a track which grabs your attention and pulls you in, forcing you to listen and making you enjoy it.
Big Boy Beastie is a track which edges further into the dance style of music, opening with a digital effect before launching into a similar riff to the previous track, this time almost sounding more upbeat and jumpy. The over all mix works as a track, but there’s something almost missing from the mix, I can’t put my finger on it but I think it’s the bass – there needs to be a more solid and evident bass line here to make sure the whole track is fully pushed forward. Now the guys did say they’ve only just recruited a full time bassist, so this is bound to have an influence on things and could well mean the writing develops over time, so something to watch out for. As a track, this one seems to shift between the early dance moments and a solid rock track towards the end, it’s once again a good combination, but odd.
Thank god the guys said it themselves, but this has been a very confusing listen. I like what they’ve done here, and at no point do you mix vocals, but there’s so much going on that it took me ages to form a wording about this one. The music has elements of dance in it, elements of rock, and elements of almost funk thrown in for good measure. As a whole, this is music designed for a good time, and on that front it fulfils its duty and does it well. I’ll be interested to see what else comes from these guys for sure, as with a bit of development this could well be a very very interesting band indeed!
