Wake Up Call
We were recently contacted by Lansdale based Wake Up Call, to let us know about their music so we could have a listen. Having started playing together in the summer of 2011, these guys are relatively new to the scene, but offering a pop punk blend in sunny weather like this has to be a winner doesn’t it?! I checked out their tracks (described as like ear sex) to see what I thought of things.
Opening with This World there’s a definite shift into the world of pop style punk, a jumpy lead line leading the way initially before growing in depth and aggression as the track builds around you. Throughout the track there’s a sign of what’s to come from these guys, offering us an insight into the future of what could well be a really quite promising band. The theme of jumpy fun and upbeat tempos continues throughout, keeping things moving along nicely – but all of this changes as Left Standing comes in to take the lead. Offering us an insight into their heavier side, this track moves away from the pop punk stylings initially and shows off a more metal edge, taking the jumpy beat and throwing down an off beat guitar line over the top to demonstrate that this isn’t a one trick pony! This contrast is what makes this band stand out I think, they seem willing to alter their style to accommodate the different audiences their after, all the while keeping their mission firmly at the forefront to ensure you don’t forget who you’re listening to. There are elements of pop punk to the chorus here, but over all this heavier display is pretty cool!
Morning Wood comes up next and once again shows off the bands ability to craft jumpy, energetic tracks full to the brim with catchy hooks and moments which are going to get you chanting along. Fast paced and far more punk-centric, this is a track which is going to be well received on the live scene. Standing out as a moment of sheer energy on the selection here, this is another track which I’ll look forward to hearing the finished version of, there’s some serious potential in this one. 40oz Dropout is another return to the more pop-punk stylings of the band, this time opening with an emotionally tinged guitar line before building into the full opening of the track with a funky guitar riff. Once again demonstrating that these guys shouldn’t be underestimated, this track is my personal favourite from the selection as it once again showcases the bands ability to rove between hard, soft, heavy and melodic.
Never Again opens up to continue the progression and immediately sounds more refined, almost as if this is a more recent track from the band. Opening with an intricate guitar line before launching into a verse section crafted for the live scene – this track is sure to have audiences jumping and joining in from the off. Once again raising the bar for themselves, this track has the hallmarks of an anthemic track – I just look forward to hearing the final version. Closing the selection with Bloagiefest (I don’t know either) there’s one last display of the bands punk roots to behold, crafting a final track which verges on old school punk purely for the attitude and aggression which flows out of it. Faster and straight to the point throughout, this is another live anthem in the waiting, the sort of track which is going to get audiences circling the stage and everyone chanting along – it’s finishing on a high for sure!
Wake Up Call seem to be onto something here, although the tracks are still rough there’s a definite sense that they’ve got some cracking songs which just need to be refined and sorted out properly. Once done, I think this is going to be the sort of thing which you want on a sunny afternoon, kicking back with a beer and simply listening. Personally, I can’t wait to hear the finished products, so get on it guys!
