War Iron
We were recently sent through The Faceless Sea, a digipack featuring two tracks from War Iron, a Belfast based ‘doom sludge metal’ crew offering a ‘twin bass doom sludge outfit playing long epic songs, detuned bass and harsh vocals’, which sounds pretty cool to me. Saying themselves that they all like slow, heavy music, I figured this was a good time to see what was on offer from the guys!
Inch Cape opens the two track EP, immediately suggesting dark things to follow through a stormy sound effect. Bringing in a sludgy bass line (and I mean seriously sludgy!) over a slowed down drum beat, you’re thrust into a pit of dark distorted heaviness, the music carrying you onwards into the track as it builds around you. Keeping everything very slow, very dark and very sludgy, this is a track which is designed to shake the foundations of your house to their core and leave you sat in the middle wondering what the hell just happened. The vocals are dry and raspy, the music raw yet deep, the whole mix forming something which you’re either going to love or hate – personally, I’m the former! Speeding things up at moments whilst contrasting that with the slow moments and snippets of vocals, this is one hell of an introduction to a band – especially at over 12 minutes long!
Following on with Face The Sea, things remain raw, heavy and slow to keep the theme running through the album. Alternating between distorted and slow, to distorted and heavy, this is another track which is simple, downtuned, raw power in a musical form. It’s hard to place this as regards to live performances as well, I imagine that it works, but the slow pace of it suggests that this is more something which you listen to at an obscene volume at home, rather than going to see it. There’s layered vocals, hammering bass lines and solid drums all the way through these tracks, and they’re certainly tracks which you should check out – just be aware of the heaviness you are going to unleash! Also – be aware that this track is over 20 minutes long – once again an anthem to listen to but it’s worth it!
In all, War Iron are a band which I can listen to, but at the same time it has to be said they won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. This is raw heaviness, slow metal with a sludgy tone and heavy vocals, so this isn’t for you softer fans out there. What you’ve got here though is a band who are able to craft tracks of over 20 minutes, tracks which pull you in and take you along for the ride, leaving you in a cold sweat as they come to a close. I want to hear more for sure, I just need to prepare myself fully for it!
