Witness The Fall
Garry from SAN PR recently sent through details of the New EP from Scottish band Witness The Fall. Originally formed in 2007, the band was formed out of being tired of bands who made music that towed the line, instead opting to create music which is extreme, uncompromising and brutally honest. Drawing influence from alternative, extreme metal and even hip hop, this band promises to be one which I think is going to offer us something a little bit special!
An End To The Darkness signals the start of the EP, immediately showing the bands leaning towards their different influences. Opening with a soaring lead line before fading the guitars into the background behind the roaring vocals, there’s something immediately striking about the form these guys have achieved. The music in the background is not only powerful and heavy, but also insanely melodic – lead lines jumping around whilst rolling drums really hammer everything home to be fully heard. Alternating the vocals between roaring and spoken, you can’t help but be pulled into this mix, only to be faced with one of the most epic guitar solos which you’re going to hear – it’s incredible that these guys are still only really just getting going yet seem to be achieving music of this stature. Raw and energetic, yet somehow refined, this introduction to the band starts things off on a high, good things are sure to follow!
Victory seems to come in exactly where the first track left off, opening with a punchy guitar line over more hammering drums and bass lines. Kicking up a notch, the speed increases through this track at a blistering pace, once again demonstrating how able each of the players in this group are. The vocals once again serve to hammer home the message of the track, elevating the mix of rolling double bass and hammering guitars – if you weren’t convinced by the first track then this one should sort it! What I really liked on this track as well was how all of the different influences seem to be displayed, there’s little sections which show the more extreme side of things, the alternative is there in the mix as well, but I’ll admit I’m not sure on the hip hop front yet. The Dying Art of Integrity continues the theme set down so far and once again hammers home the message that these guys are here to stay. The vocals hammer over everything whilst the guitar work in the background is simply epic, there’s once again a hell of a lot going on here yet it all seems to work well together. If I had to choose a favourite from the album then it would be this one I think, the track has so many elements from hammering guitars through to vocal samples, extreme metal style breaks and roaring vocals, this is one which I am going to come back to a lot!
The Tragedy Of Man comes in next, another track fuelled by rolling drums and hammering guitar lines whilst the vocals continue their roaring journey through the mix. Keeping everything at pace throughout, this is a track which you can see slaying on the live scene, live crowds are going to go mental when they hear this! Sounding akin to a mix of Trivium and Arch Enemy (two names mentioned on their one-sheet), there’s something accessible about this track whilst still keeping an original stamp firmly placed over everything, it’s hard to put into words but it works! Righteous Kill continues this theme, opening at a blistering pace again and making you question how the hell anyone can drum like this! Almost funky at times, this is another track which is going to get live crowds moving along and chanting to the band, and one which I need to get out there and see for myself.
Closing the album with Darkest Hour (No Surrender) you’re left with no doubt that this hasn’t just been an album, it’s been a journey for the listener as well as the band. Slightly different in the tone here, the production on this track seems lighter which gives it even more of a live feel than the other tracks. Darker, heavier and straight to the point, this is another track which is quite simply mind blowing. If you like soft happy music, then don’t listen to this one, but if you like powerful heavy music which makes you want to see a band live, this is for you!
Witness The Fall are one hell of a band for one which is just starting out. Their music is advanced and cleverly put together whilst still keeping everything fresh and new, allowing the music to do the talking rather than following a particular genre or expectation. Each track on this album offers something slightly different in its sound, but all the time there’s a clear feeling that you’re listening to the same band as you were a moment ago. The guitar work is incredible, the bass heavy and the drumming extreme, and that’s without considering the vocals which really make these tracks whole – so what you’ve got is a band who can work together, craft tracks and really, produce something which is pretty damned special. All I ask is that they get out of Scotland and on the road so more people can see this!
