Wolvespirit
Press releases come in all the time here at Loud-Stuff, so it takes something pretty special to stand out and get us dribbling all over our chinos (we don’t really wear chinos, I just felt it appropriate for the image I’m trying to create here). That said, when the press release came in for Wolvespirit and their new album, Dreamcatcher, I immediately sat up and took note. Opening with the words ‘To put it into a nut shell: Wolvespirit plays rock. Good old fashioned and down to the bone, grinding rock. Loaded with heavy guitars, big drums, a bass that will let your pants flatter around your knees, and a swirling Hammond organ’ – things sounded pretty interesting from the off! Going on to reveal that none other than Michael Wagener (Skid Row, Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne) mixed the tracks, I was already loving the album before even hitting play. As such, I figured that it would be all too easy to just whimper mercilessly at the thought of an old school rock album, and a better use of my time would be to crank on the record and have a listen for myself – so I did!
Bursting into being with Blowin Up things build from a faded out eerie sound into a twangy guitar line, before the whole mix forms around you. Soft yet hard hitting vocals soon come in, building the mix up further and developing the rock n roll orientated sound before the whole thing comes crushing down. Hammering into being with a funky, dirty and rock orientated riff, the mix soon turns into something which is sure to get asses shaking, beers flowing, and everyone loving what they’re hearing. Funky, catchy and packed with guitar licks, lead lines, rumbling bass rhythms, solid drum beats and vocals that you’ll fall in love with over and over again – this is straight up rock n roll, and it sounds damned good. Holy Smoke (check out the video below) continues this approach further, this time upping the pace and tossing you into a fast paced melee of straight up dirty assed rock n roll. Funky and powerful, the track seems to almost flow out of the speakers, engulfing you in a rock orientated sound and reminding you of where the music you listen to nowadays comes from. Layered vocals and melodic guitar lines get you involved, creating a catchy mix that you’re sure to come back to time and time again.
Toning things down for the opening moments of Making Me Wild, a rumbling bass line signals the start of things, before a, shall we say ‘pleasured’ female groan signals that we’re in for something new. Soon returning to the rock roots of the band, there’s something incredibly sexy and seductive about this track, the sort of thing that’s going to make you fall in love with the track before transporting you to your own private place where only you and the track matter. By the time the soaring solo comes into being there’s nothing else required, this track quite simply stands out as a hell of a moment to behold. From Venus I Came once again keeps things moving, this time showing off the skills of the Hammond organ before introducing a sludgy and groove orientated guitar line. Slower to fully accentuate all of the elements within the band, this track doesn’t rely on speed or distortion to hammer home its message, instead allowing the guitar and organ mix to do their work. Sounding like something straight out of the rock n roll handbook, this track is one which is going to kill on the live scene for sure – one to look into!
Continuing on through title track Dreamcatcher into Crossroads, Gipsy Queen and Raven, each track seems to flow out of the speakers as a little nugget of rock n roll goodness, reminding you of the simplicity of good rock, and demonstrating why we all need to get out to see Wolvespirit when they’re over here on tour. It’s when Wake Up comes about though that my own personal favourite track of the album is reached, opening with a gradual build in before launching a full on rock assault out at you – this is a track that’s got serious single potential. The organ line mixes with the hammering guitar work, forming together with the rumbling bass and heavy drum work to create a sound which is going to get the volume going up, the neighbours banging on the wall, and you loving every second of it. Another track which personally I think is going to be damned awesome on the live scene, this one is an anthem in the waiting, and a track that I know I’ll be returning to time and time again.
Closing with Spacetrippin’ things close much as they began, with a hard hitting funky assed rock track designed for a damned good time. The bass work on this track seems to shake the ground as it rumbles out, working with the guitars and drums to back up those soft and soothing vocals, forming a sound that once again is sure to have you longing to be watching it live. Funky, powerful and straight down the line rock n roll, the album finishes on a high, showing that Wolvespirit are here, are ready, and are about to take on the world – and they might just win.
Rock n roll from Germany – it had me guessing for a while when it first came in. Listening to the album from Wolvespirit though it’s impossible not to love it, it’s full of hooks, moments which get you moving, moments which sit you back, and moments that remind you why you started listening to rock n roll in the first place. Definitely one for fans of rock, metal…hell music in general – and a band I need to get out to see live!

Wolvespirit - Interview
1). So thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us guys, first off, introduce yourselves.
Rio Eberlein here from the WolveSpirit. I am the guitarist of the band and you are very welcome for the questions!
2). When did you all get together?
Debbie, Oliver an myself met in 2006 or so ,when we all moved together in the same flat. But we really started doing music seriously as WolveSpirit in 2009. From there on we started to put together a band and just asked people from the local music scene to join the band. There many line up changes till know!
3). How did you all meet? - see above
4). How would you describe your music?
We consider ourselves just a rock n´roll band. We don’t think in terms of genres. For some people what we do is Stoner or Psychedelic, or whatever, thats fine. But for us it´s just Rock n`Roll.
5). Who are your major influences?
We grew up listening to old Bands of the 60s and 70s. Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd. Later on we discovered bands like Wolfmother, Rival Sons, Monster Magnet... But i guess we listen to alot of diffrent music. My brother Oliver and me studied classical music. All music thats handmade and played with heart is good music!
6). So you’ve recently been featured in Classic Rock which has to be cool, what else are you guys aiming to achieve in the coming year or so?
We just want to get through to as many people as possible. We love what we are doing and want to share our music with the rest of the world. I think, if we really make people more happy with our music thats the greatest achievement for any artist.
7). What do you think it is about your music that’s catching peoples attention?
Our music is handmade! It´s rough, not over produced or anything. It´s real, coming from heart. You can feel real emotion and in the end that´s what music is about. Music is the language of the heart.
9). What albums/EP’s have you released so far and where can people get hold of them?
We released an Album “Spirit Metal” in 2010, but it’s drastically different from what we play now. There’s only a few copies left and it won’t be reprinted again. The EP we did 2011 isn't available any more - sold out, it was also a limited edition. It contains 4 of the songs that are on “Dreamcatcher”, played and mixed a bit different. But you can order “Dreamcatcher” on Amazon, I-tunes and of course directly on the WolveSpirit Homepage. We're looking for a distribution company at the moment so you can get “Dreamcatcher” in your local store soon! Check it out HERE
10). 70’s rock is legendary as setting the foundations for what we hear now, do you think it’s about time for a resurgence of the older style of music?
In the 60s and 70s some of the greatest music of all time was created. It was the golden era of rock music. Today theres lots of music that´s just too perfect. It feels like plastic, synthetic. I think people want real music again and i think thats were the whole retro boom, that we have now is coming from.
11). Tour wise, can we expect to see you on the road soon?
Yes! Were planning a Europe tour for August, including UK, Sweden and Germany.
12). Finally – say something profound that will make everyone think:
Thank you for the interview - Let the music be your master! :)
