I caught up with the guys at The Bakery in Perth on 5th Jan 2013.
Supporting were sleepmakeswaves and Tangled Thoughts of Leaving.
As I am an honest reviewer I must admit that I did not make it to the gig in time to catch Sydney’s sleepmakeswaves, however I have it on excellent authority that the guys were awesome. It was my pleasure to watch Perth’s owns instrumental prog rock foursome Tangled Thoughts of Leaving. Those guys always impress me and they are more solid than ever. I had regular cold shivers during their set in the 30+ heat wave.
65daysofstatic came on and played for over 90 minutes in the alien heat. Those Sheffield boys must have been feeling it, although their demeanor remained super cool throughout their set. My photographer and I had spent a little time between sets, in deep discussion analyzing genre description. Terms such as ‘core’, ‘math’, ‘progressive’, ‘psychedelic’ and rock verses metal.
In conclusion by an unanimous decision, our description of 65daysofstatic is Instrumental Electro Prog Rock with occasional loosely psychedelic influences. Yes that’s a mouthful but I challenge anyone who hears them to try and break them down more accurately.
Their music is a trip. They are not repetitive, every track highlights something different, powerful epic beats, guitar riffs and special effects, each tune is layered differently, performed passionately and delivered dramatically. The original members, Joe and Paul have been fortunate to find like-minded souls in Simon and Rob. As a band they all play percussion, and the 3 guitarists, constantly switching roles, with keys and mixers, to create their ever evolving and diverse tunes.
The Bakery, the venue itself is unique in many ways from the exterior being what appears to be a collage of ship containers, to the inside with it’s urban/retro/classic mixed up atmosphere. This evening was humid, hot and filled to a fairly full capacity. Judging by the amount of Perth musicians in attendance as well as the obvious UK fan base and Aussie crowd, these guys are respected in the music industry and rightfully so. I really enjoyed the musical diversity of their set. I watch the crowd enjoy the journey with their band live, and noted that as one of only about 10 females there, these guys play with emotion that is obviously greatly appreciated and understood by there fellow mankind. However as escapist instrumental vibes go, us from the fairer sex should definitely give it a go, it music that moves you without another’s lyrics or content directing you. Make it your own and enjoy.
