The Maine5 piece band from Tempe, Arizona formed in 2007
The Maine is John O'Callaghan (guitar), Garrett Nickelsen (bass), Pat Kirch (drums), Kennedy Brock (guitar), and Jared Monaco (lead guitar). Described as Rock Discography Can’t Stop Won’t Stop (2008) Black and White (2010) Pioneer (2011) Forever Halloween (2013) Q&A Mel – Have you guys toured here in Australia before? The Maine - We have! We played Soundwave in 2011, and came back again with New Found Glory and Taking Back Sunday. Mel – How did you gain the support role on the Anberlin Tour? The Maine - We have been going back and forth with them trying to put together a tour package, and we were fortunate enough that they wanted to tour with us down under. Very excited for those shows. Mel – Will you have time to soak in Australia on this visit? The Maine - Hopefully! In the past, we have only had a couple days off in Australia. We're hoping to have more time to go exploring this tour. It's a beautiful place. Mel – What are you expecting from the Aussie Audience? The Maine - Judging by the shows we played with NFG, we already know Aussie fans get wild! We're just really excited to play some new songs off of Forever Halloween. Mel – What Aussie bands have you heard and liked? The Maine - I'm a huge fan of Empire of the Sun! Really dig their sound. I'm also really into Tame Impala as of late. Mel – Does travel inspire your writing? The Maine - I think so. Writing for us is usually a compilation of experiences. It just happens that most of our experiences are had while traveling. We're on the road 3/4 of every year, so it definitely influences our songwriting. Mel – Who have been your greatest musical influences? The Maine - For our band, at this point in time, we're really into bands like Wilco, The Rolling Stones, Pavement, etc. Wilco is just an amazing group of musicians who have been doing it right for years. They're my favorite band of all time. Their DIY approach has really inspired the way we want to make records from now on. Mel – What comes next after the tour here? The Maine - We're still ironing out the details, but I can guarantee it will be more touring. We're on the road until we can play these new songs for everybody that wants to hear them. Mel – Message for your Australian listeners? The Maine - Thanks so much for supporting us! We can't wait to be back. Don't miss out on this Anberlin tour, it's gonna be a good one! Andrea Ianni – ‘Likewise’
Andrea Ianni is a solo performer from London. The album ‘Likewise’ is Andrea’s first album as a multi-instrumentalist-producer-composer (friend of his played a guitar solo on one track and another one played a cello part on another song)
It is fairly unique material with familiar feel as the influences are definable. Always Rock with hits of everything from pop to Avant guard and all that comes in between. Somehow it works. What makes his sound unique is the way he has blended diverse musical styles. All the tracks are epic length. ‘Kings of Prisoners’ is a stand out track with interesting arrangements and great guitar riffs. Each track is an instrumental journey in addition to the vocal storytelling. His imagination seems to have no boundaries. Which is why I urge you to listen, less predictable than anything you have heard in a while. Strong beats and great guitar work. Andrea is musically talented and committed, inspired by classic rock artists and writes from a sense of social consciousness and awareness. Have a look at the video for ‘Kings of Prisoners’ on YouTube, if it’s your cup of tea then spread the word. Exposure will insure the success of this talented man. I had a chat with Andrea about what inspires him and what the future holds for him. What inspires you? Andrea - I have been busking in London for a year now and even just dealing with people passing by on the street is very inspiring, that's I think because I find relationships in general very inspiring (any kind of relationships, with other people, with yourself, with animals, universe, environment etc ) I think ambiguity is very inspiring, because to me is very connected to nonconformist. Basically what I try to do with music is constantly reacting to what I've absorbed in my life and give it back to the environment. I don't believe in creative process (because to me you can't create or destroy but only transform), I believe in reacting process, as acts of willingness (which is supposed to come from your nature) to plunge into yourself and pick up what you need to express yourself and this way having an active relationship with what surrounds you. What’s coming up for you? Andrea - well, actually I’m trying to keep my live band together, you know, it's difficult to find unpaid people willing to play material composed by another person and never been involved in the 'writing' process, plus this is London, and sometimes you play with people from all over the world and somebody can decide to go back home! At the moment I've probably found a person who's going to be my manager and we are trying to work something out for the rest of this year. I’m not recording a new album before a couple of years at least, now my priority is gigging as much as possible and try to get a distribution for my album. And I’m shooting a new video clip after summer, just finishing the screenplay in these days. Is there anything you would like to share with your fans? Andrea - let's inspire each other constantly Click on the link below to hear Andrea Ianni ‘King of Prisoners’ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5gJ4Y2coqk Andrea Ianni’s album ’Likewise’ is available for free download on http://soundcloud.com/andreaiannihere All upcoming live dates are available on Andrea’s Facebook Page below- https://www.facebook.com/andreaiannihere http://soundcloud.com/andreaiannihere https://twitter.com/AndreaIanniHere https://www.youtube.com/AndreaIanniHere http://www.reverbnation.com/andreaiannihere |
Veora Exposé
4 piece Sydney band formed in 2009 Veora are Mat Zammit – vocals, Michael Refalo – Guitars, James Muscat – Bass and Ryan Summut – Drums. Described as Indie/Rock. I have tracked their progress over 2 years, and I admit the band have impressed me, their sound is intriguing prog rock that you can instantly like and want to hear more of. For this reason I wanted to get their name out there in anticipation of their debut EP coming soon. They are currently in the studio recorded there eagerly awaited debut EP due for release mid year. They are also playing live in Sydney and Melbourne over the coming months, accompanied by additional guitarist Chris Breedon. As you can imagine it’s always a manic time when recording and rehearsing for live shows, but the guys managed to answer a couple of questions about what inspires them.
Mel – Who writes the bands material? Ryan - Well it is really a group effort. A lot of it starts with a guitar part/riff that Michael brings in or a bass part that James has and it goes from there. Then we all jam on it. Some songs come together quickly then there will be others where the structure will change a thousand times. Michael is usually the one to bring the magic that brings it all together at the end. All the vocals are written by our front man Mat. Mel – What inspires the band? Ryan - That's a hard question to answer on behalf of everyone but for me, it's great to get together with your good mates to write music that can be enjoyed by all. I think bands we are all listening to at that particular time in the writing process also gives us inspiration, you can really see the influences come through in our music. See Veora live on – Sunday 27th May - Kaleidoscope festival at Parramatta Park NSW Loud-Stuff will review the EP as soon as it comes out and keep you updated on the bands future show dates as they are known. Children Collide Review
No need to expose this 3 piece Melbourne band. If you are an Australian Music fan you would know exactly who they are. Formed in 2005, I have watched this bands evolution into the defined act that they are today. Previously producing 3 studio albums and 3 EP’s with countless single successes under their belt. Children Collide are Johnny Mackay (vocals/guitar), Heath Crawley (bass) and Ryan Caesar (drums). Described primarily as Post Punk Rock/Indie Rock, their current sound has a more psychedelic feel, designed to open your mind and make you think. I can hear their influences from past and present musicians in their new material and it is contagious and engaging. Unlike other reviewers I do speak in the first person because when I write it is my personal point of view, so having been around for the original punk era I can say, Children Collide are a credit to that time. The uninhibited style in which these guys create and perform takes me right back there. The band played at Capitol in Perth on 30th March as part of a national tour. Supported by quality indie rock band The Palms and Deep Sea Arcade. The set started with the thunder of drums and the crowd’s reaction was solid. Throughout the show the audience showed their love for the trio by chanting along with every tune, the moshing was intense with countless stage invasions. Credit to the band and the venue staff, it was all taken in their stride and the punters were returned to the crowd, to enjoy the rest of the set. Having seen Children Collide last year before Johnny had the ‘hair cut’, I vividly remember thinking ‘someone is going to get hurt!’ on this occasion the crowd were on form and mad, but remarkably no injuries.
The intensity of their set did not let up, even when the band played ‘Loveless’ the crowd continued to thrash around forcing Johnny to remark on his view as ‘I’m trying to perform a serious song, and be taken seriously by a audience from a Pennywise show’ his humor was ever present. Even at the finale when an eager fan knocks his guitar out of his hands as he is playing and causes the bands quick retreat back stage, Johnny still manages to salute the crowd with the bird. Capitol in Perth is a great live music venue, sound and lighting were spot on. Children Collide have a strong, loyal and diverse fan base that includes a 40+ demographic of veteran punks, for whom there is only one genre of music! For that they should be saluted. With the knowledge that Ryan Caesar (Drums) is leaving the band, I can only reiterate what several others reviewers have already stated – he will be missed. Reapers Riddle Exposé5 Piece Perth band, formed in 2008, Reapers Riddle are – Clayton Mitchell – Vocals, Wayne Frodyma - Drums, Jason Edwards – Bass, Michael Willis – Guitars and Kristen Sanfead – Guitars. I caught up with the band on 31st March at the Rosemount in Perth for their (LIVE recording) feat. Homebrewe, Delusions of Grandeur. The guys are a pure rock band, during the set they previewed some of their new material to be included in the next album. The latest material has a definably more solid rock sound. They have dug deep to create some very evolved rock music. Massive drum and bass lines with guitars and vocals telling the story. I am sure their fans will be impressed with this progression, as they made it clear on the night that they are hungry for the new album. Front man Clayton Mitchell is the character behind the band and he engages well with his audience, you can tell he works hard and is relentless in pushing his band forward. Here is what he had to say:-
Who writes the bands material? Clayton - We all do, every member has influences from so many different eras and genres (mainly Rock and Metal though) and we like to listen to the ideas of everyone before casting them out as either not fitting or maybe for a future track. Every member past and present has played a major part in the writing of our songs and will always be credited for their work, whether its a drum riff, a guitar solo or lyrical suggestions we always look at what’s on the table before we finish the meal. What inspires the band? Clayton – Music! Inspiration can be found in everything and as the lyricist I always like to turn a bucket of shit of a day into a kickass song, I'd recommend it to anyone. If you have a bad day/week/month then take it out on a piece of paper, write that shit down, even if you can’t write scribble gibberish, as long as YOU get it... That is expression! That’s probably why big bands seem like they are selling out, with all the success and money, they suddenly don't have anything to write/whinge about... so they buy songs from songwriters who do. What's next for you guys? Clayton - Well we are currently working on our first full-studio album 'The Ballad of Tristan Daye'. This album will follow and dive right into the mind of a young man slipping into a devastating state of depression. We don't want to divulge too much just yet but we will be featuring a few well known artists from the local music scene and will be working closely with a few different instrumentalists to really make this story a journey through the mental battles some struggle to win. Perth Music Scene - care to comment? Clayton - I love the Perth Music Scene, we are up there with what Detroit used to be I think. Seriously there is sooooo many bands here and only a handful of venues to accommodate it, but those that do, do it cause they love the scene. I could not think of a better place to start out as a band cause it's hard, and it makes you stronger, it makes you strive to get the audience. If its too easy, you don’t grow as a band, work as a unit or get prepared for the shit show every so often, it is character building. The only thing I don't like about the Perth scene is some bands build a circle and just do their little circle and think everyone else is a joke, when I think they are the joke. Then they whinge cause that there isn’t enough local support, haha karma. I have always had my hand out to upcoming AND established bands, as I believe this leads to a stronger local music scene. We often give bands their first show, and ask any! They love it! 'Local Music United' I say. Stone Circle Exposé
4 piece Perth band Stone Circle are Jeremy ‘Harry’ Harris – Vocals, Craig Skelton – Bass, Scott Howe – Guitar and Derrin Kee – Drums, formed in 2008. Described as Rock, with a hint of prog and blues, I caught the band at their show at Charles Street Hotel in Perth on 17th March. It was a pleasure to meet the guys, they are indeed like family to one another, 4 very different personalities who creatively compliment each other perfectly. This translates into their performance on stage. They are tight and respectful of each other’s talents and they all get their chance to shine during the show. REVIEW of gig and last album will follow soon, in the mean time here’s a taster, on the story that is “STONE CIRCLE” so far.
Discography - 385 Newcastle Street 2009 Living for Sunshine 2011 Purchase information - Available through website www.stonecircleband.com.au ITunes and through all good record stores including Mills, Dadda’s and 78 Records. Mel - Who writes your music? Jeremy Harris - The whole band is extremely forthcoming in the writing process and we all contribute both lyrically, melodically and arrangement wise. That’s why on the album there are no individual credits as such, just one big credit to the whole band. Mel - Inspiration and influences Jeremy Harris - Way way way too many to mention but if it’s rock, if it’s pop, if it’s jazz, if it’s contemporary, if its classical, if it’s progressive, if it’s indie, if it’s clever, if it’s catchy and if it sings and grooves then we’ve probably got it in our record collection. Craig Skelton – We write some of out most popular tunes and lyrics from an extremely personal prospective, subjects that are important to us, and our families. As a tribute to them and their support. Mel - Plans for the next 12 months for the band? Jeremy Harris – Performing, writing third album and preparing for South American tour. Last Friday we headlined Curtin University beach bash to over 1600 students. We’ve also been tucked away writing new material for yet another studio album with rumors that it will be rockier & edgier, containing a generous helping of anthemic choruses, soaring riffs and tidy grooves. We reckon it’s looking like a 2013 release is on the cards but only once we’ve completed the next grueling few months of live local gigs and an extensive South American tour in April 2012. Mel – Tell us more about the South American tour Jeremy Harris - We depart Perth on 17th April to Argentina where they will play the Niceto Club in Buenos Aries on the 19th April 2012. With a capacity of 2000 people, playing in such a magnificent venue is almost unheard of for a relatively unknown band. Then it's off to Caracas in Venezuela for 2 days to play a festival and sample the local cuisine. From the 23rd we fly to Colombia to gear up for a run of dates that will make your mouth water, playing at The Hard Rock Café, The Ozzy Bar and The Canterbury Bar in Bogota. Depart Bogota, Colombia for Holguin, Cuba for a week of Festival and media appearances including a tree of friendship planting ceremony with members of the Cuban government and local government officials, multiple radio interviews and television appearances, including one national morning TV appearance. Mel - Previous Supports, Anything outstanding to mention? Jeremy Harris - Yeah there’s been some highlights like playing for Bob Geldof’s charity event in Sydney to raise case for the Japanese Tsunami and the NZ earthquake victims and scoring some cool festival supports overseas not to mention we’ve just completed a run of awesome shows supporting You Am I, Amy Meredith & Shannon Noll (Where the band set a new merchandise sales record), and having already sold 1500 copies of the second album “LIVING FOR THE SUNSHINE” in less than a year since the album launch, there’s not much of a let up for the next 6 - 12 months. Mel - Perth Music scene, care to comment? Jeremy Harris - We live here, we play everywhere and anywhere, There are some cool things happening and there are some cool muso’s. It’s like any other place in the world, you gotta work and play hard to get a piece of the action. If you want it, then take it. If you want to complain about the state of the music scene then get off your arse and get out to a local gig ! Support original local muso’s ! Silent Knight Exposé
5 piece Perth band Silent Knight are Zoran Cunjak - Vocals Stu McGill - Guitars, Cam Nicholas – Guitars, Cam Daw - Bass and Paul Wrigley - Drums
The band formed in 2011. Drawing influences from the classic 80's metal sound and cranking up the metronome, Silent Knight are Perth's Power Metal force! Songs are injected with a high energy galloping rhythm, rapid machine gun fire double kick drums, scorching guitar solos and harmonies, topped off with classically trained vocals. I caught up with the guys for a quick chat before their set at the Civic Hotel, Inglewood, where they played with Beltane Fire and Foulplay on 3rd March. Mel - Who writes the bands material? Stu – I write the music and Cam Nicholas writes the lyrics. Cam has always had a flare for lyrics, they always work and Zoran and I are happy to leave that with him. Mel - What Inspires you? Cam – Most my lyrics have a double meaning, the obvious and a hidden meaning to the band. It makes the lyrics personal to the band but subject to interpretation to the listener. They are usually based on situations we or someone we know have found themselves in. Mel - What’s next for the band? Stu – We have material ready for our debut album ‘Masterplan’ which we will record later this year, at the moment we are heading over east to Sydney to play at Metal Evilution, with Darker Half, Metal, Rampage and Thunder Steel. Mel - Where can we purchase your material? Stu – We released 2 songs last year on Reverbnation, and we are on a compilation CD that was given away at Soundwave this year. To hear the band click on the link below http://www.reverbnation.com/silentknightband Mel - Perth Music Scene, any comments? Stu – It’s diverse, covers most genres. But there are a lot of talented and tight Metal bands from Perth. Shadows at Play Exposé
4 piece band from Blue Mountains NSW. Shadows at Play are Liam Mcalary – guitars and vocals, Andrew Bailey – guitars and vocals, Ash Sazel – Uke and Bass and Jordan Nunes – drums. The band formed 2011, they have been described as pop/folk, but no band is ever that easily definable. My ears can hear the alternative and rock influences, peaking through as their material is still quite fresh, diverse, and original. I caught up with Liam from Shadows at Play for a quick Q&A.
Mel - Who writes the bands material? Liam - We have quite a catalogue of material and its definitely a diverse collective of the whole bands ideas. I write the lyrics. We change and rearrange some of the bands previous material, as I am the most recent member. Mel - What inspires you? Liam – I have performed as a musician since school, going into a band a pursuing a career in the music industry is a natural progression for me. I knew this is what I wanted to do and I driven to make it happen. When I write I will often create a fictional scenario, not unlike a movie script and write from perspective of the characters within the script, it makes writing more interesting and less about my personal experiences. Mel - What’s next for the band? Liam – We are focused on gaining exposure, locally and nationally. We have the material for an EP to be release later in the year. We believe our music has a market, people just need to hear us. We are not doing this to become millionaires that would be unrealistic. We’re just keen to keep doing what we love and hopefully bringing you all some joy by doing so. http://www.triplejunearthed.com/Artists/View.aspx?artistid=52112 https://twitter.com/#!/ShadowsAtPlay http://www.myspace.com/shadowsatplay http://www.youtube.com/user/ShadowsAtPlay |
Copious Exposé
5 piece Perth band Copious is Nodd Scott – Vocals, Steven Teune – Guitars, Ben Muller – Guitar/Synth, Blake Withnall – Bass and David D’Souza – Drums.
The band reformed in 2008, with the current line up. Described as rock, progressive, metal, the band’s sound is both heavy and melodic. Self Titled EP was launched in May 2011, and the band have plans to record there second EP later in the year. I caught up with the band supporting Serial Killer Smile at Rosemount Perth – Fri 17th Feb 2012. Their live show is a journey, each member knows their craft well and collaborates to create a consuming sound. They don’t rely on vocals or music to carry their melodies it is clever complimentary collaboration of both. Live you are drawn in by the obvious familiarity and confidence that this band who have known each other and played together for years have. The tunes are deep and the grunge like baritone vocals from Nodd are so comfortable, that listening to the band at home and zoning out from reality in surround sound is another appealing side to their music. They produce both high energy and chilled out music that is complex and provoking. I was hypnotized by their show and actually lost in emotionally charged guitar performances. You know you have experienced a great gig when the riffs grab you, lift you up, linger and set you down with goosebumps. Excellent stuff. After the show I had a short Q&A with the band, although patrons volunteering their endorsement of the band often interrupted us. You could feel the love from their Perth fanbase. Mel - What inspires you? Nodd – I am generally upbeat person, although my lyrics can be quite dark. I draw from friend’s experiences as well as my own previous personal experiences, issues and social topics. Mel - Name some influences Nodd – We have always loved the live music scene, good honest rock music. I guess we kinda got right into 90’s rock music and blues. Dave – I am really into progressive rock and that fuses more and more into our sound. Mel - What’s next for the band? Nodd – We have new management so t he next 12 months are going to be very busy, recording a single and new EP, The band is travelling east later in the year for live performances. We are writing all the time, and performing locally. It’s a very time for the band. Mel - Perth Music Scene – Care to comment? Steve – We love it that’s why we are a part of it. Nodd – Its good, there is a lot of talented muso’s here in Perth and we are proud to be a part of the scene. Dave – The bands here including ours deserve more national exposure. The divide between Perth and the rest of the country is reducing all the time and that is a good thing. Click on the link to hear the band – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kcfHTZ4mbA&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7sEiiIlNko&feature=related To get a copy of the bands self titled EP locally they are sold at 78’s, Planet Music and Mills, alternatively you can contact the band directly via any of their links and they will send it to you. Stone Bleeder Exposé
5 piece rock band from Perth. Stone Bleeder is, Jason Miles - vocals, Rob Concannon - guitar, Dan Lewis - guitar, Shawn Lewis - bass, Gerard LaGrenade – drums.
Unsigned and underground literally, tonights live performance by Stone Bleeder at the Basement Bar, Swan Hotel in North Fremantle. The cozy venue and intimate crowd reminded me of why I love my job. The band only formed in July 2011, however when you hear the level of confidence that they play together, you could be mistaken into thinking they became established way before that. They are a unique and talented group of unpretentious individuals who perform without ego as a real stripped back and energized collaborative. The music is written by the band as a collective, Jason Miles on vocals writes the lyrics, the results are an additive blend of diverse tastes and influences. Mel – What inspires your music & lyrics? Jason - Most of the songs I write are story’s, not always personal, I am often inspired by friends relationships, however I also enjoy writing about current social issues that capture my attention. Gerard – we like to keep it real, with 35 yrs in the music industry, I am always drawing from past experience, I have played Reggae, Blues and Rock, to name just a few, sometimes it’s necessary to simply recreate some classic sounds and then the band place a modern spin, to complete our solid sound. Mel - What are your influences? Jason – The band has a vast and diverse musical background, we draw from that, from 50’s vintage rock n roll to current more progressive rock. It is a real amalgamation of classic and modern styles. We enjoy performing our tunes with Rock, Blues or Punk edge to each track, we sound unique yet familiar at the same time. Mel - Describe your sound Jason – Loud and uncomplicated. From the driving riffs, ear splitting leads and pumping bass and drums Stone Bleeder delivers high octane rock n roll that can get any crowd going. Stone Bleeders EP Set Me Free delivers a taste of what we are about and what crowds can expect at their live shows with a hard dirty raw rock n roll sound. Mel - Where do u want to be in 12 months time? Jason – The band will be recording later in the year, we have the new material ready, however at the moment our focus is to perform more live shows here in Perth and firmly establish ourselves locally. The band is keen to perform Summer Festivals next year as well that is something we will be working towards. Mel - Perth Music Scene – Any comments? Gerard – It is was it is, we except that and believe we can make an impact on the scene, because we have a sound that will appeal to many who enjoy live music. We are energized and diverse. People will not have heard anything like us on a local level and I know we will catch on quickly. The band are a team, we compliment each other and respect each other’s abilities. In my experience that doesn’t always happen as effortlessly as it does with Stone Bleeder, we all naturally gel. ME - Exposé4 piece band from Melbourne. The band is currently overseas supporting massive international acts such as Evanescence, Kasabian and Panic at the Disco. ‘Me’ are, Luke Ferris - Vocals, Damian Tapley -Guitars, Michael Godde - Bass and Spike Rogers - Drums. Australian bands who successfully tour overseas are inspiring. Sometimes we are unaware of the achievements of our homegrown bands and musicians. Hopefully making our readers aware and tracking the progress will result in more Aussies touring worldwide and gaining experience and recognition they deserve. The writes up from the music media in the UK have been positive and complimentary to this relatively new and extremely hard working quartet that are ‘ME’
When did the band form? August 2007, but did not record for quite a while after that, and did not record much. We played live a lot instead, including a weekly residency that lasted 10 months at the Evelyn in Melbourne. Who writes your material? Luke is our most prolific writer, he is good with melody and makes good calls. We all write, but he often brings things that have a clear vibe that we can then either pull apart entirely or run with as is. Lyrically we share the load more. All in all we're a collaborative band, and everyone often has ideas for everyone else's instrument lines. Are you writing now? Yes, we are often writing, and have loads of material in the works. We could do with more rehearsal time to sort out the ideas a bit more instrumentally. Currently there are demos flying around all over the place. We also have too many songs recorded for our album, so it will be a brutal cut down to 11 or 12 tracks. How do the band describe your sound? A retro-vintage war machine with sparkles and mermaids, overseen by Elrond. Who are your influences? We love classic British bands; The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen. We also love Radiohead, The Mars Volta, System of a Down, Jeff Buckley, Patrick Watson, Rufus Wainwright and many others. In our band we have a love for classical, particularly Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and the rough Russian stuff. We love requiems and film soundtracks, as well as musicals and theatre. As for random stuff, there's a bit of hair guitar like Kansas and Boston, and groovy stuff like Battles and Grizzly Bear. What inspires you? Anything that is free to grow. How long have you been overseas now? We spent 6 months in the UK last year, and now we are back for all of 2012. Besides UK we have played in Paris twice and Hamburg once. We will be playing some shows in Europe, a little in the US, and a lot in the UK this year, including festivals. Best thing about being support to such massive acts? Learning how to play to massive crowds. Meeting so many lovely people after the shows. The sounds and reactions the crowd gives us. The fact they are genuinely excited to be there. Are you feeling the love, so far away from home? Very much feeling the love all the way to our cotton socks! Our twitter and facebook pages are soaked in it. We are supremely grateful right now. I there anything your missing about Australia? Bonds clothing, Melbourne coffee, abundance of sun, good water, good fruit and veg, everyday kindness, and beautiful healthy people everywhere. When will we see you back on theses shores? We will be back for January and February 2013 for a tour. Prescient – Exposé
3 piece Perth band, the ‘Prescient’ concept was conceived in late 2009, with members Drew (guitars) and Rob (bass) enlisting the Drumming abilities of Taz, a like-minded local musician looking for a way to quench his creative thirst. It was over the next 6 months that all of their thirsts began to find some satisfaction, as they spent every spare second writing and recording the most complex material they could. It was upon accomplishing an acceptable complexity that Prescient evolved into the instrumental act it is known as today. The ability to entertain listeners without the use of a vocalist became their immediate goal. Each new musical creation was drifting further than the last from the need of vocal support, until finally a completed portfolio took form - leaving the possibility of vocals far behind.
2 years in the making, Prescient’s debut EP “The Polynomial Framework” has now been immortalised. Offering something for everyone, this instrumental portfolio of creative experimentation boasts 6 tracks all designed for pushing the boundaries of every individual’s musical tastes, and represents Prescient’s first step towards creating a musical machine that leaves no room – or need - for vocal support. With song structures walking the fine line between being either "insanely technical", or simply "chaotically improvised", Prescient manage to fit into each song a diverse range of feels and sounds, each drawn from a more obscure influence than the last. Composed of three members, Prescient provides an honest, instrumental metal experience aimed at satisfying the hunger of all metal heads alike - be it an appetite for huge soaring choruses, epic screaming guitar solos, jaw breaking gut-heavy metal, blinding speeds of pure thrash, or mind altering time signatures running sixteenths around the standard 4/4 bars. The vocals are strong and confident, complimenting the driven performances from guitars and drums. Red Remedy represents the very best in current Australian Progressive Rock. Shellfin – Exposé
4 piece stoner rock band from Brisbane. Released their debut album –Secondhand Family after successful release of EP Stay for tea.
Album runs with out breaks for 45 mins, and is available for free via Bandcamp.com, for a physical copy, cd’s are available from shows and JB hifi stores if not sold out. The band formed back in December in 2008. Josh (guitar) had just quit his death metal band at the time and was looking to slow things down and have some fun musically. Both Josh and Geeks (drums) lamented the fact there were no good stoner bands doing a truly awesome Kyuss sound so they got together, jammed once, wrote five or six songs in one go and started the search for other band members. Since then there have only been a handful of line up changes with the main dynamic of Josh and Geeks present every time. MJ on (bass) No one is really sure if Doug (vocals) has officially joined the band but he keeps showing up to practices and gigs, and we keep him filled with beer so it seems to be working out quite well for everyone. We all hope he sticks around. The band is currently working on their second album due for release at the end of 2012. Click on the link HERE to hear Shellfins single ‘In the Head’ ‘In the head’ is excellent example of what the band has to offer, scoops up the listener and takes you on a journey back to honest rock and escapism with classic style riffs and thumping beats. To see the band live – check out upcoming shows March 3rd 2012 – The Tank Hotel in Brisbane CBD May 26th 2012 – Shellfin will be supporting Karma To Burn from USA Message from the band Download our album and if you enjoyed it, tell 5 pals for us! Free album for a bit of exposure is a good deal we reckon. Otherwise, we hope to see people at a show sometime as we rock pretty damn hard. |
Redcoats – Exposé
4 piece Melbourne band formed in 2007, their Debut self titled EP (Island Records) and single ‘Dreamshaker’ came out July2011 and the band immediately went on tour with Stone Temple Pilots. More recently the band supported Grinspoon in Victoria.
The band classifies themselves as Rock n Roll. Founder members Rhys Kelly (Bass) and Andrew Braidner (Drums) were joined by Emilio Mercuri (Vocals) and Neil Wilkinson (Guitars) in 2009, the band writes all their material as a collective. So I asked them to elaborate, this is what they had to say, “We all write. No one ever really comes in with a completed song. It's always 'hey uummm here's a riff. lets play', then it either takes off and becomes something, or it doesn't feel right and is quickly abandoned.” I always find a band influences intriguing, some are obvious from their sound. When you listen to Redcoats for the first time it is not easy to pigeon hole their sound at all, it has a classic rock feel, with the edginess of the modern progressive rock, so I put the question to the band, what are you influences? “Our influences are broad and different for each member. The combination of all our influences comes together to give us the sound that we have. We all like timeless and classic sounding music, stuff that doesn't date when you go back to it in two years. Stuff with a bit of honesty about it. We often pray to Miles Davis or George Harrison if that helps.” I like the words ‘classic’ ‘honest’ and ‘rock’ and the band have used all 3, still not an easily definable sound, so I urge you, if you read this article, then click on the link and listen. This band will leave a lasting impression. Heath Johns of Universal Publishing quoted on signing the band on 24th Jan 2012 “Their blistering brand of rock deserves a global audience and we are very much looking forward to helping the band create and explore local and global opportunities over the coming years.” That kind of endorsement from a leading name in the industry does not come without massive credibility. Click on the link HERE below to hear Redcoats – Dreamshaker You can download the Redcoats self titled EP on iTunes or buy a hard copy at JB Hifi. Message from the band “Hello, we are a rock band and we appreciate your consideration in your most daunting task of selecting your preferred rock bands for this current period and into the future. If it helps with anything perhaps you should be aware that we are all upstanding citizens and we do the dishes and we all walk dogs part time and we work very hard at maintaining our work/life balance which we feel helps keep us well rounded individuals.” No Rock egos with these guys, and that is the way forward in this mad industry. Sorry NME, we are over the ‘God Like Genius’s’ sometimes it goes to their heads.
