10 Questions we ask every band...
Alice Can't Turn Left
|
1). What are the names of your members?
Sasha Smith - Vocals Jody Hanlon - Guitar Adrien LeFevre - guitar Steve (Waco) Jackson - Drums Rob O Sullivan - Bass, keyboard, backing vocals 2). When did you all get together? The band started in autumn 2010 with Jody and Waco and a mutual friend, writing some originals and playing covers but it took some time to finalise the full lineup. It was in early 2011 that we started to gig, sometimes with stand-in musicians so to put a starting point I would say late 2010. 3). How did you all meet? Waco and Jody have been friends for years from school, Rob is a childhood friend so we already knew each other before the band. Adrien and Sasha were found through putting up ads on the internet for the positions. We all seemed to click and get on great so it worked. Adrien was originally meant to be the bassist but we found he was a better guitarist. Sasha was the best of a few singers we tried out. It's creepy because she was a randomer off the internet from down the country but it turns out she's cousins with 'Alice' (the girl that couldn't turn left), she went to college with Rob and she grew up around where Waco's family is from, we reckon it's meant to be. 4). How would you describe your music? The tough question. It's always hard to put a 'tag' or 'genre' on ourselves so usually we just say what others have said about us. We've been described as pop-punk mostly, compared to the likes of No Doubt and Paramore. Maybe something like if Rise Against had Christing Aguilera as a singer. I think some of our music can be heavier than pop punk but the female vocals soften the sound. 5). Who are your major influences? We have a very varied set of influences, from ambient music to death metal. Each of us have our own tastes which combine to form our sound. Sasha’s influences are more towards the pop end of the spectrum than the rest of the band, but with some punky attitude. Her favourite artists include Etta James, Stephanie Germanotta aka Lady Gaga, and The Pretty Reckless. Adrien draws his main influences from hardcore and post-hardcore bands. His favourite bands include Rise Against, A Day to Remember, and The Movielife. Jody’s influences vary hugely from bands like Killswitch Engage to Sigur Rós, Murderdolls to Enya, with a huge love of punk, and pop-punk. His favourite bands include Blink 182, Social Distortion, The Used and Descendants. Rob is definitely more on the heavier side of things. Influences range from hip-hop, to classic rock, to progressive death metal. His favourite bands include Led Zeppelin, Pantera, and Veil of Maya. Waco’s a fan of punk, pop-punk and a bit of funk. He also plays as part of a bagpipe band’s drum corps. His favourite bands include Green Day, Zebrahead, and Foo Fighters. 6). Complete the sentence: One day as a band we hope to… ....tour several times a year. In music these days we have found to 'get known' is supporting bigger bands and touring as much as possible. In Ireland the scene is limited and almost underground so playing in the one city will only attract a certain amount of people. We see touring as a way to physically meet new fans in other areas, it's hard to promote yourselves on the internet alone. 7). Why should people listen to your music? Should? I wouldn't say people should in a forced way. We would like people to listen to us for two reasons; because we put a lot of work into this band and it's always nice to hear people appreciate this, it drives us; also people need to give feedback not only to us but to the music scene in general. There are a lot of really good up coming bands out there that are hugely under estimated, they need to be discovered. We feel there are not a huge amount of people making the type of music that we do so it's cool to hear that people are interested and enjoy it. 8). What are your plans for the upcoming year? We want to record more stuff this year as we have some songs we want to hear on a CD, maybe another EP or larger project. As well other continuous things like interviews, more radio time, more photoshoots, TV time and stuff like that. We have other stuff planned and in the works but it's all kept very quiet and under wraps for now. The updates of these will be posted on our website so everyone should keep an eye on that. It will be an exciting year and we think people will be excited too. So until all the announcements it's ssshhhhhh! 9). What albums/EP’s have you released so far and where can people get hold of them? We have released our EP 'Right Back Forward' at the end of 2011. It's been recieved really well. The CD can be bought from Tower records and E2 music stores or from us personally, if people abroad would like one they can email us and we'll post it. Also they can be found on our facebook page or soundcloud and other various sites, the links are on our website. We've also released a video for the song 'the next round, which can be found on youtube or our website 10). Finally – say something profound that will make everyone think: Oh on the spot here. Can I interview you? I think people would like to know more about you right? Our band name came from dangerous sleeping habits- true story! |
