Black Suit Youth - NEW!
We’ve checked out Black Suit Youth in the past and each time have enjoyed what we’ve heard, so when Bryan dropped me a line the other day letting me know about their new single, Another Night In The Tombs, I was interested to see where things were headed for them. Described as a high energy, alternative/post punk band, these guys have been working solidly to develop their sound, hone their skills and build up a loyal following – so what of the new tracks?
Another Night In The Tombs kicks off in that Black Suit Youth style, immediately launching us into a punk fuelled melee of hammering guitars, pounding drums and rumbling bass, the mix forming into something which is sure to get you moving along from the word go. Adding in elements to bolster the mix further, it’s striking how big a sound the guys have managed to achieve here, showing further how they’ve developed their sound over the course of their time together. Packed to the rafters with hook after hook, there’s something about this track which connects with you as you listen, offering up a genuine sense of accessibility without allowing the raw edge of the band to be lost, sticking to their ‘alternative’ approach, fuelling things further with their ‘post punk’ outlook, and working together to form a track which sets Black Suit Youth up as a band to be keeping a serious eye on this year. Even going so far as to chuck in a guitar solo, there’s nothing missing from this track, no note out of place, and no point that isn’t enthralling – a cracking track from the Long Island lads.
Moving onto the previously unreleased Look Out Below, once again we’re offered another taste of Black Suit Youth and their irresistible post punk stylings. Sounding akin to more modern Papa Roach stuff in some ways, yet managing to keep their signature raw edge moving throughout, there’s a real ‘radio friendly’ edge to things here, the sort of thing that is sure to get them some serious recognition. What’s really striking here is that the guys have managed to incorporate an emotional edge into things without going over the top or losing their way, it’s a track which seems to showcase their style whilst demonstrating that they’re not one trick ponies, they can turn their hands to whatever they so choose. Definitely another track to make sure you get out and check out, the chaps have done it again and presented us with two tracks that are sure to secure them a slot amongst the ‘ones to watch’ of 2013.
I’ve always been impressed by Black Suit Youth, not only because of their music, but also because of their drive and determination to constantly evolve, developing their style and ability whilst keeping their signature style at the forefront of everything they do. Black Suit Youth are a band that we should all be paying serious attention to, and a band I see good things for in the future.

Black Suit Youth
We featured Black Suit Youth a while back, so when they dropped us a line about their new EP, Take It Or Leave It, we jumped at the chance to take a sneaky listen! Needless to say, I wasn’t disappointed!
Opening with Bad Dreams, the music straight away resumes the dark and bluesy approach which made their other stuff so appealing, holding huge amounts of power and melody, combining them to perfection. Every single element of the band can be heard throughout this track, the mood becoming one which is going to get you wanting to hear more, pulling you in to the gravelly vocals, the sludgy guitar lines and the rumbling bass rhythms, all crafting a sound which is impossible to resist. Somehow catchy despite the darkness, this is a track which shows how the band have developed, how they’ve taken their sound and developed it, worked on it and evolved as a band – it’s a great start!
Believe It continues the idea of moving forward, this time adopting a syncopated beat to get things moving whilst somehow managing to combine soft with harsh, roaring vocals. Once again throwing into a catchy chorus, this is another track which is going to grab your attention and make you want to see them live, unable to resist the powerful melee of carefully crafted instrumentation. As if to demonstrate that they can do pretty much anything they want to, Hey Trouble soon takes over the lead and throws us into another catchy track full of guitar hooks, and music which sounds like steel drums (if it is guys, kudos, if not, apologies – must be my headphones!), once again making you want to listen harder, making you question how these guys can produce such a well formed and deep sound. The upbeat tempo of this track stands it out as one from the EP to check out, somehow offering yet another insight into the outlook of the band.
Closing with Sun Slips there’s one last chance to see what a band can do when they set their mind to it – opening with a hammering outlook before pulling back to calm everything down and add a sense of reflection and emotion. Catchy once again, this final track on the EP leaves me with no doubt that this is going to be a band who have still got more to come, more up their sleeve and a clear outlook on how they’re going to get there. I don’t know if I would say it’s my favourite track from the EP as it’s hard to pick from the 4, but it definitely stands out as one which you need to make sure you check out!
Black Suit Youth seem to be working damned hard to develop their sound, crafting things carefully and working on how they can get their name out there more and more – and it seems to be working. This EP works through 4 movements rather than tracks, each one offering a slightly different approach to things, but all the time keeping things moving and firmly focused on the audience. I for one need to get out to see these guys live, my only advice is that you do the same.

Black Suit Youth
This band consists of three guys from the United States. Having read the bands bio on their Facebook page, I thought I’d use their own words to describe them. 'Black Suit Youth is a high energy, alternative/ post punk rock band from Long Island, New York. Formed in 2004 under the original name The New York Dynamite. The year 2007 brought with it a name change and a new album. In summer 2007, the band, now called Black Suit Youth, released "Our Future is History". Want to know more? Head over to the guys Facebook page and give them a like.
Rustland was the first track I listened to from this Rock/Punk/Indie band from New York. A high tempo, puncturing guitar riff gets the ball rolling, seeping deep into your pores. The drums are the driving force behind the riffs, creating a massive sound that addicts the mind, leaving you craving for more. The riff is catchy and with the addition of the vocals, I instantly liked this track. I couldn't put my finger on a band that they sound like and it made me like the band even more. The vocals compliment the style of track very well and having the subtle tempo changes throughout it all adds up to a monster opening track.
Track number two on my list was Hot Summers In Hi-Fi. A complete contrasts in starts compared to the opening track greets us here. A lone mellow guitar solo eases us into the song, promptly joined by charismatic and heartfelt vocals. The tempo is relaxed but you can sense the tempo will change in the vocals, they dually deliver. As soon as the drum beat kicks in the tempo quickens, never reaching the heights of 'Rustland' however, it’s a different type of track and for me it works superbly. The vocals sound a little different from the first track but they adapt so well, they sound awesome and are aptly supported by solid riffs and a hard hitting drum beat.
Rebel was the final track I listened to. A menacing, heavy guitar riff/drum beat duet, sweep you off your feet, throwing you around at a frantic pace. As always, the vocals enter the frame taking the track to a whole new level. The band almost works like a building company and their tracks are their houses. The solid foundations are there with the spine tingling guitar riffs and earth moving drum beats. The first floor is then added with the emotional, water tight vocals, with the second floor made up of variations in tempo and style. Once again there were variations, changes in tempo and style and something different compared to the other tracks I listened to, Why have I not heard these guys before?!
Guy’s if you like alternative rock, punk rock, Indie or just something a little different, you have to listen to these guys. Like the review says the foundations are there for big things, the styles are unique, the riffs are fresh, and it’s a win win situation!
