BOSS CH-1 Super Chorus Pedal

The CH-1 Super Chorus is Boss’s current generation of chorus effect pedal. As expected, the CH-1 faithfully conforms to Boss’s infamous pedal design; created with portability, functionality and usability in mind.
At First Glance
On the front, the pedal has the standard boss bypass accompanied by the four effect parameter knobs. These are: level, eq, rate and depth. I’m sure the guitarists out there are more than familiar with what each of these controls do, but for the benefit of those that aren’t quite so familiar: level controls the output signal level of the pedal, eq controls the pedal’s equalization (basically lets you shape the tone), and rate and depth control the frequency and depth of modulation respectively.
The Sound
The CH-1 is a very capable pedal; but what do I mean by that? Well, for me, a capable pedal is one that not only does ‘everything it says on the tin’, but also has real character of its own. The CH-1 has just that – it’s capable of delivering that much sought after crisp-clean chorus effect, such as can be found adding interest to famous licks the world over – but crank up the rate and depth and you get some more outlandish modulation that’ll really make your guitar-parts stand out.
Typically you’ll probably want to use it to add a little ‘shimmer’ to your sound – and this is where this thing really shines, producing pretty good ‘Come As You Are’ or ‘Walking on the Moon’ embellishments to your cleaner sounds. The CH-1 is also a great tool for enhancing your driven tones, whereby a little subtle modulation can help to lift your higher-gain tones through adding a little extra interest in the sound.
Usability and Build Quality
The usability of this device is certainly an attractive feature; the huge signature Boss bypass switch makes it easy to switch in and out of your effects chain, and tweaking effects couldn’t be easier with the four clearly labelled control knobs. And, like all Boss pedals, this thing’s built like a tank. It’ll definitely fare well for gigging. Or on a world tour. Or through a nuclear holocaust. In fact, to be quite honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if in 40,000 years the only remnants of civilization are a collection of Boss pedals and Jedward’s hideous fringes.
As with the rest of Boss’s stompbox range, the pedal can run on battery or via 9v power supply. The latter is generally recommended as the CH-1 isn’t shy when it comes to battery consumption.
Verdict:
Overall, the CH-1 provides a great staple chorus effect that has the flexibility to blend seamlessly with your other effects. From dreamy psychedelic sounds to subtle shimmering textures, the CH-1 Super Chorus is guaranteed to be a great addition to your floorboard.
As with most of the Boss range, the CH-1 is readily available at your local Dawsons: Click HERE.
