Bury The Hatchet
Another one from Garry at SAN now in the form of Bury The Hatchet, a Kent based 5 piece offering up their own unique taste on good old metalcore. Due to release their latest offering, It Was Never Enough, on the 23rd of July, these guys are creating their own style of music whilst following some of the conventions of their predecessors, drawing influence from the likes of Lamb Of God and Protest The Hero. Having already shared the stage with the likes of Feed The Rhino and TurboWolf, this promises to be one hell of a ride!
Opening with title track, It Was Never Enough, there’s a real sense of melody and harmony flowing through things, a soft piano line combining with string effects to lead the way into the track and lure you into a sense of confidence about what is going to follow. Acting as an intro track into But We Still Keep Moving, the idea of melodic power continues as the guitars and drums take over the lead and throw us into a pit of all out destruction. The rolling bass drum which sets the beat combines with the rumbling bass line, adding in a sense of depth to things and making sure you’re still listening to everything that’s going on. What’s most striking about the track is how it doesn’t stick to one convention, it seems to rove around through different styles to keep the track alive and interesting. The vocals which come in won’t be what you expect, but they still manage to work with the heavy backing track, keeping a sense of all out power flowing firmly through things.
Protest continues the approach of throwing everything together to form one hell of a heavy sound, the guitars this time adopting a more technical riff method which when combined with the bass and drums, gives the track a sense of movement and depth once again. There’s something catchy about this track as well somehow, managing to combine all of the elements to allow you to hear all of them and be fully immersed in the sound, it’s a sound which on the live scene is going to absolutely kill!0411 comes up next (odd track name I know but that’s what it says here!) and seems to crank the level of devastation up another notch, throwing down into a mix of blistering guitar work and rolling drums. The vocals continue to lead the way through the track, adding in a sense of sheer aggression over everything and keeping you wanting to know more. It’s striking how heavy this track really is, yet the guys seem to have once again added in a sense of melody to things to keep it interesting and thought provoking, roving between the different sections as if to prove they can pretty much do what they want.
Closing the EP with Broken Soul there’s one last chance to bear witness to the powerful goods these guys seem to be able to produce. Finishing on a serious high note, this final track will leave you dumbfounded as to how these guys have managed to craft such a heavy sound in their short time together, finishing with a track that is one of the heaviest on the EP and shows exactly why you need to get out there and check these guys out.
I think it’s always difficult to sort out a bands influences as there’s always bound to be too many to list, and with these guys I can’t help but feel that’s especially true. Within this EP there’s elements of all out power, elements of melody and moments which will make you simply sit back and think, how the hell did they just do that? What you’ve got here with Bury The Hatchet is an EP which is going to be played over and over again, accompanying moments in life where you need that heavy assed soundtrack to get you through – and personally, I think they’ve crafted it pretty damned well. Definitely one to keep an eye out for.
