Cambion
Exeter based Cambion are one of those bands that you come across occasionally that makes you sit back and really listen to what they’ve got to say. We were put on to their music by their manager so had a damned good listen! Jester and Salem are from the bands upcoming EP so represent the newer stuff from them – and it seems to suggest good things!
Jester is a track which I think demonstrates the bands variety throughout – moving from heavy (but quite nu-metalish) riffs to harmonic choruses back to even heavier sections, there’s plenty here to keep the listener interested in what’s going on. The vocals match the guitar lines and the drums set a constant pace throughout, in all this track has all of the key elements which I think should be found in any good track
Salem starts off in much the same way, fading in with effects luring you into believing this is going to be a softer track – then the drums kick in at an insane pace coupled with raw vocals and you realise this one is actually going to prove to be damned heavy. The chorus is catchy again, although this time in a much more disjointed way, syncopated guitar lines and vocals all working together even though at first listen they don’t seem like they should.
Living Lies is yet another fast track, drawing inspiration from dual guitar lines and pounding drums matched with screaming vocals and break downs which shake the foundations of the house, this track demonstrates the ability of the band in true metal style. Paralyze is much the same, using guitars to lead into the drums and building up throughout the track, I think this track is probably my favourite from the selection as it is just so simple yet heavy.
Torn and Dismembered ends the selection in much the same way as it began, starting off heavy and never letting go. This track is sure to be a hit live so I’ll be interested to check out this band live just to see if they can match it. The solo on this track is also something pretty special, one to definitely check out! The only let down on this track is the vocals, they lack the raw power of the other tracks and almost seem to give off the image that the band just wanted to get this track finished, it’s a shame given the precedent set up to this point.
In all, Cambion were a good band to be introduced to, one which are easy to listen, can play their instruments well and can produce a pretty awesome metal track. I’ll look forward to the EP as I think it is one which I’ll listen to again – after all, it’s always good to hear new stuff!
