Colours Afrobeat Foundation
The essence of Afrobeat is a medley of traditional yoruba music, funk, highlife and jazz combined with chanted vocals and all fused with potent percussion. The genre gained momentum in popularity in Africa in the 1970's. Colours Afrobeat Foundation are Ireland's predominant Afrobeat band consisting of sixteen members. Many cultures are represented in the band, with members hailing from England, Brazil, Cuba, Poland, Ireland, Italy, Nigeria and The Democratic Republic of Congo. Colours Afrobeat Foundation boasts a stellar line up of musicians, all mastering their various instruments and craft.
The band's debut EP PFWP-Prayer For World Peace is rich in the advanced and infectious drumming tradition of yoruba music, with a powerful djembe and bongo presence. The exuberance of the jazzy horns and multiple guitars echo the highlife element of Afrobeat. It is a radical and progressive piece of work. It is proactive in dealing with social issues and profound in pushing the message of global peace, all engulfed in the most upbeat and infectiously good music. It is a tremendous EP, celebrating the rich vintage of Afrobeat. It is both vibrant and socially aware in perfect measure, all presented as a veritable carnival of music.
Colours Afrobeat Foundation will be performing in Dublin's Sugar Club on saturday, 25th of May 2013, as part of Dublin City Soul Festival and in celebration and commemoration of fifty years of Africa Day. It will be an event of high energy, further excited as the band will be joined by legendary Nigerian drummer, composer and songwriter Tony Allen. Allen is cited as being the masterdrummer of Afrobeat. Fela Kuti, pioneer and founder of the genre, said of Allen "without Tony Allen, there would be no Afrobeat". The debut EP will be available on the night, which promises to be an unmissable party of epic and polyrhythmic proportions.
