Craving Strange
According to their bio, Craving Strange have crafted a sound which is like a chopped salad of Foo Fighters, Stone Temple Pilots and Jimmy Eat World leading to an edgy and poppy sound – which sounds pretty cool to me! The band have already achieved some pretty solid highs in their career, so when they got in touch about their tracks on their reverb nation page, I couldn’t help but want to hear more!
Opening with Sunrise there’s a sense of a band who have developed their sound, taking what could be an all-out hammering rock track and almost holding it back, allowing the melody and creativeness to do the talking rather than relying on all out power or distortion. Catchy and melodic throughout, it’s easy to see why the band have drawn comparison to the bands they have, the rhythms simply flow out of the tracks and leave you wanting to hear more. Throwing in a guitar solo to keep you engaged, the best way I can describe this music is it’s the sort of thing you want to be playing whilst you drive at night, it’s got that atmospheric feel to things that would work with the glare of the lights and the emptiness of the night, it’s a well crafted track which I know I’ll be listening to more!
Tonight We Die For throws another nod to their influences, once again crafting a track which is going to lure you in and make you want to hear more. Catchy and melodic throughout, this is another track which demonstrates the bands ability to craft tracks which are going to engage the people who listen to them. Crafted for the live scene, this is a track which audiences are going to love, it’s got the right balance which will work on a stage. Out The Window follows much the same conventions, once again almost reigning in their power to allow the song-writing to do the talking through the track. The vocals rove around here, matched by the bass while the guitars are kept restrained, not allowing the temptation to hit the distortion pedal too early to take over and instead creating another catchy and powerful track. It’s In My Skin though which comes as the real surprise on the selection here, almost sounding funky as it grows yet still keeping the power held back. The key thing here is the bass line, it seems to build the track into being before the guitars take over the lead for the chorus. It’s easy to see why these guys have had the recognition they have, this track is one which is going to convert a lot of people to the ways of the band – another high point for sure.
Closing the selection with Keepers Are Killers the band seem intent on showing off just how able they are, this time harking towards the likes of Buckcherry in the funky edge which the track has. The vocals sound akin to the likes of Live whilst the guitar work here takes on that funky approach, the approach which is going to get crowds of people dancing rather than moshing – something which has been severely lacking on the music scene of late. Another well performed track, the final moments of this one left me in no doubt that this is a band we need to get over to the UK to play some gigs – the live circuit needs it!
Craving Strange have indeed taken their influences and crafted tracks which work as heavy rock tracks, but equally as moments which you’re going to just sit back and listen to. Personally, I think the time is about right for music of this sort to come back out again, and I’ve got a feeling that these guys could well be leading the charge – one to watch out for!
