Daylight Robbery
Tony from Daylight Robbery recently got in touch about their debut album, Cross Your Heart. Formed in Birmingham, the band have crafted their own unique style of heavy melodic rock, securing themselves the crown of ‘the new kings of heavy melodic rock’ (or so their website says!). Having already received play on numerous radio stations, and gotten positive feedback from rock publications such as Classic Rock and Planet AOR, I figured it was about time I saw for myself what all the fuss was about!
Title track Cross Your Heart sets the scene for the album, opening in a grand manner and offering you a serious dose of stadium rock – this is music which is going to get live crowds moving and people firmly on board. Melodic and powerful throughout, this track demonstrates just why these guys have been awarded the title of the new kings of heavy melodic rock – they’re doing it and doing it well!. Shame On You continues this theme, once again launching us into a melee of hammering drums, rampant guitar lines and gravelly, powerful vocals. The bass backing everything up here gives the track a real sense of the rumbling, adding a depth which can often be lost in rock of this sort. As if further demonstration was needed to prove how able these guys are, this track is one which will stick in your head for days to come, you’ll find yourself singing along when you least expect it!
The Perfect Storm once again speeds things up, launching you into a hammering mix of powerful guitar rhythms combined with that synth once again. The overall feeling here harks back to the glory days of Ozzy, the hammering moments of Maiden and the all out stadium grandeur of the likes of Def Leppard, it’s a clever mix and the band seem to have pulled it off with aplomb. This is a feeling which is confirmed for me in While You Were Sleeping, once again launching you into a moment of music which is going to make you think back to when you were first listening to rock, reminding you why it was you started falling for the genre and showing that there are still bands out there who are working hard to keep good, solid catchy music coming out! This is a serious high point on the album, and a moment I would seriously advise you to check out.
Crossing The Great Divide seems to mark a moment of change in the album, opening much softer and creating a sense of a ballad, the piano line echoing around the soft and soothing vocals which are soon thrust upon you. Soft, slow yet powerful and almost theatrical in the sheer scale of the track, this is another demonstration of what these guys can do when they set their mind to it. The contrasting soft and hard which the band manage to incorporate into this track is exactly what you would hope to hear from a band like this, showing that these could well be one to watch out for! Real Love Is The Answer is the one moment on the album which I would personally question, and I don’t know if it’s just because the track doesn’t seem to follow the conventions which the band have set out for themselves. Sounding like a mix of Bon Jovi (early) and Buckcherry, this track is a good track in its own right but it just doesn’t work in the continuity of the album as a whole, almost turning things a little too cheesy for a moment.
Reunite luckily returns us to the solid rock foundations of the band, this time throwing in some rock organ for good measure and crafting another track which is going to have you hooked in and wanting more from the moment it gets going. Another track which is surely crafted for the live scene, this is another high point on the album, and a track which makes me think I need to be adding these guys to my list of bands to see this summer. You’d be forgiven for thinking you were listening to some good old Europe as She’s got Me Understood comes up to take the lead, launching into a guitar fuelled frenzy, all the elements working together to craft a track which is going to have hair flying and air guitars across being played across the venue. Another track which is going to stick in your head once you’ve heard it, be prepared to be singing like a nutter once you’ve heard this track!
1,000 Points Of Light certainly suggests good things are to follow from this album, opening with a mash up of rolling drums, hammering guitar lines and dark and evocative synth sounds, all paving the way for the lyrics to come into being. The lyrics could fall into the stereotypical ‘80’s hair metal style’ yet manage to avoid that pitfall, instead offering us a symphony of layers, all working together to hammer the message home from the band. It’s then only left to Line Of Fire to close the album, leaving you with one final moment to sample exactly why you need to be listening to these guys. Moving from a soft opening into another hard rock mix of guitars, bass and drums, this final hurrah on the album is going to leave you with a taste for the band and get you out there to see them – if it doesn’t, you didn’t listen to it loud enough!
Daylight Robbery are an interesting band as they’ve taken a style of music which has already been and gone, yet they’ve managed to make it sound current and fresh once again. Their ability to write songs is what is going to really get them the success, crafting tracks which are going to slay on the live scene and convert the masses to their style – definitely one to keep an eye out for!
