Death Radio
Death Radio from Cambridgeshire were good enough to get in touch recently about their music and their 7 track album. Always looking for new and exciting bands to check out I saw this as a chance to see what they had on offer! (Note – the following tracks are from their Facebook page so do not necessarily represent the order of the album.)
Bad Porno opens with soaring guitar lines over a pounding drum line before kicking in with some powerful vocals. Fast, raw, edgy and full on from the outset, these guys deliver full on sleazy rock music from the moment it starts to the second it ends. Throwing in some pretty damned amazing guitar lines in behind the pounding rhythm section, this track seems to go from strength to strength as it progresses through, adding in ever more elements to make sure it’s sounding fresh and new at all times. Catchy yet raw throughout, this track is one hell of an introduction to the band!
No Way Out follows on, opening sludgy and raw once again, this time opening a much more slowed down approach but still kicking in with those rip-roaring vocals which I’ve come to expect. Kicking into a catchy chorus, you’ll find yourself chanting along to ‘no way out’ after a couple of listens. Layering the track with those sludgy guitar lines, pounding bass lines and solid drums beats, the band adds in little snippets to make sure you’re still there – the occasional pinch harmonic or similar just to keep it alive. Speeding up to really hammer home the riffs and the spat vocals towards the latter part of the track – this is probably my personal favourite track from the selection here. As it fades and Last Action Hero kicks in with a vocal sample from the movie, all of a sudden takes on a more sleaze metal approach to things, layering the guitars with different lines and pounding onwards – this is some solid rock right here and it’s good! Once again catchy, this track is a prime example of why these guys are going to be so popular on the live scene -it’s catchy, good fun and loud! Soon enough you too will be chanting along that you shouldn’t mess with Arnie – it’s bizarre but works somehow!
Piss On Me (I’m on Fire) follows on (interesting track name…) and once again throws you in a pit of layered guitars and pounding drums all linked together by the soaring vocal lines. This track would be at home in a pub bar keeping the punters asking for more but equally on a festival stage entertaining massive crowds. Whilst the track name might make you question what the hell is going on, listen to the music and you’ll be left in no doubt that what’s going on is solid rock music which is designed to make you move along with it! As the track ends and Rough Sex brings the selection to a close (with some interesting sound effects at first!) you realise what you’ve just heard isn’t a joke, isn’t a laugh but is a group of guys who can all play their instruments seriously well and are enjoying doing it – which is surely the point. I couldn’t help but find myself nodding along and tapping my feet to this track – it’s so damned catchy!
I don’t know how to define Death Radio, they’re a band who have brightened my day up no end if I’m honest! The music is catchy, heavy and accessible, whilst still sounding raw yet well put together. The track titles link to the vocals and what you’re left with are tracks which you’ll want to listen to over and over again. I for one can’t wait to hear the full album!
