Devil Down
Big D of Noize Level Critical recently said that I’ve got a penchant for ‘angry music’, and as a result said I should listen to Devil Down. This Stoke on Trent based band describe themselves as pushing the boundaries of heavy metal to one side for a clear run up the Metal Mountain offering gritty riffs, thumping drums and damn right aggressive double sided vocals, which to me sounds like something which is going to prove to be damned awesome.
For What It’s Worth is pretty much testament to exactly what they’ve said, hammering drums and roaring vocals all underpin one of the most insane riff laden sections I’ve ever come across. Roaring through the track there’s a real sense of Fear Factory going on at first before the band smash their own take on things and cause you to be sat on your ass with a massive smile on your face. Hammering riffs push the track into a melodic section of layered vocals, all causing the track to be elevated beyond a simple metal tag and made into what can only be described as a monster, and something to be a little bit scared of. This is serious music here and I for one am loving what I’ve heard so far – and this is just the first track. Continuing on its rampage until the second it comes toa close, I can imagine how live crowds respond to this – and it’s carnage. What’s really quite incredible is the guitar solo section the band have chucked into the middle of the track – hammering guitars, rolling drums and then more of those roaring vocals – this is insane!
If you were hoping for a break with If Only then you’re going to be disappointed I’m afraid, this time kicking into a slowed down riff which still holds all of the power of the first track but this time sounds even heavier due to the slowed down tempo. This track once again hammers away through the distorted guitars, roaring vocals and pounding drums, all the time making sure you’re listening, then smashing you in the face with the next section they’ve got to offer. Unrelenting throughout the track, this is another example of how to write a metal track which is going to rip peoples faces off before having them thank you for the experience, I’m not sure my insane tag even comes close but it works!
Big D is normally pretty spot on with the bands he sends across to me, and on this occasion he hasn’t disappointed – this is angry music done bloody well! This is the sort of music you want to hear after a bad day at work as it calms you down and makes you feel better about everything before raising you back up to a point and preparing you for the next conflict. I want to hear more from these guys as quite simply, 2 tracks just isn’t enough!
