Distance To Fall
Distance To Fall are described as ‘one of the most exciting acts around today’ on their Facebook page, saying they combine a heady combination of exhilaration and unbridled enthusiasm into their songs. Born out of Harlow, the band are out there developing their sound, working to hone their skills and building a following wherever they go – so when they sent us through a link to their Rise Above EP, I was looking forward to checking out what they had on offer!
Opening with title track Rise Above there’s an immediate high standard set, the music flowing out of the speakers and combining a sense of distortion with a sense of melody from the off. The vocals are the biggest shock initially, coming in with a roar and not holding back, the message growing heavier as the track seems to grow around you, the guitars working in perfection with the drums and the bass backing the whole mix up. All of a sudden there’s another change as the roaring fades into more melodic singing, immediately crafting a sense of contrast in the track and showing that these guys know what they’re doing. I really like the way this track progresses, moving between roaring sections and more calming moments, each time keeping the theme firmly based around the guitar work but offering you the chance to join in and sing along – something which is going to stand these guys in good stead on the live scene. Behind The Mask continues this idea onwards, initially opening with a soft and melodic guitar line before the powerful vocals come into take over the lead. The combination of melody and power is even more apparent through this track, once again forming into something which is going to keep you guessing, keep you listening and secure these guys a slot on a regular playlist on your stereo. A definite high point on the EP, this is a track to make sure you check out.
You’re No Good marks a slight change in the progression of the EP, and you’d be forgiven for thinking it was going to be a punk track based on the introduction to the track, but all thoughts of this soon fade out. Moving into a spitting mix of fast paced vocal lines, powerful guitar lines, pounding drums and enough bass to shake your ribs out of your chest, this is a seriously accomplished track. Throughout there’s a clear nod to the bands influences, yet there’s also a firm stamp across it, almost as if to say ‘this is ours, don’t mess around with it!’. I love the Disturbed like vocals, the almost Offspring like bass line which starts things, and the Atreyu like combination of vocals – it’s a real mix of different styles which technically, shouldn’t work – yet it does. Closing with Bleed Our Nation there’s one final demonstration of how unique a band we’re dealing with, the final moments of the EP not giving away anything yet showing once again that this is a band that can combine styles to perfection resulting in a sound which can only be their own. Powerful vocals combine with roaring guitar lines, pounding yet restrained drum lines and more of that bass, before throwing down into a chorus/break which is going to get pits moving and people chanting, a great end to a great EP.
It was clear from the off that this was going to be an EP to be reckoned with, it’s got all of the hallmarks of something great in the waiting and is just waiting to be discovered now. What Distance To Fall seem to have achieved is something which combines different elements, different sounds and different approaches resulting in a sound which can’t be put into a genre, it simply crosses over too many. The result though is something pretty spectacular, and something which you need to make sure you check out.
