Endogeny
We were recently contacted by John from Endogeny about the band and the music which they’re producing. Coming from Queens, NY, these guys formed in Spring of 2011 and are out there trying to get a bit more known. Having played some open mic shows and opened for The Things They Carried, they’ve got some tracks recorded for people to check out. I thought it only fair I take a peek at what’s on offer!
Opening with My Days Are Numbered there’s a real sense of psychadellia going on, it’s a bass heavy rhythm underpinning a flange style guitar line, the whole mix sounding like something which would have fitted into the music scene of the 60’s with aplomb. That said, there’s a real breath of fresh air running through this music, it’s got a slight grunge tinge to it which adds a sense of urgency to things, without allowing the music to become rushed or over the top, it’s just laid back summer music. Keeping everything based on raw elements, the chorus elevates everything to a catchy tune which on the live scene is going to have people singing along for sure. What I like about this track is it’s the sort of thing that you hear as a B-Side to a record when a band has made it, it’s got the hallmarks of achieving something pretty special in time. Continuing on its chilled out journey, this isn’t a fast paced or aggressive track, but I would challenge anyone not to enjoy it!
Spontaneous Combustion follows on, opening much more energetic than the previous track but keeping the sense of melody firmly in place. This track phases the guitar line in and out which adds a further sense of the psychedelic to things, once again allowing it to sound relatively chilled out whilst still keeping a pace going. Catchy once again and sounding akin to some of the earlier Nirvana stuff, this is another one which is damned easy to listen to, as well as one which you could see receiving some serious airplay once it’s been refined. I think that’s my only complaint about the music as a whole here, there’s the need to have this recorded properly as at times, the vocals can overload the mic which leads to some distortion, it’s not a comment on the music at all, just something to work on in the future! As the track comes to an energetic close though, this is easily forgotten and the next track beckons!
Trapped closes the selection on the bands FB profile, once again opening bass heavy and slowed down before launching into a sludgy melee of guitar lines and hammering drums – this sounds almost like the band down the road rehearsing which gives it a sense of being real, excellent stuff to hear. There’s also a lead line which hammers out over the intro to this track, once again adding in a new dimension to things to make sure you’re not losing interest. Sounding akin to some of the grunge era heros, this is another track which, when recorded professionally, has the scope to be something a lot of people connect with. As a closer to a selection it does what it’s meant to do as well, leaves you wanting more and to know what’s going to happen next!
I’ve really enjoyed the three tracks that Endogeny have got on offer, they’ve got a feel of a band who are on the verge of doing something excellent once they’ve refined their style. It’s important to remember these are rough recordings and that this is just a three piece, but there’s a lot of scope here for sure and some serious points to build upon. I look forward to hearing what comes next, I really do!
