Grey Goes Down
As an update to the review earlier, Aaron who has recently joined us had a listen to the full album and has shared his views on something which he openly says he liked!
Safe Sex gets the album started, the guitar solo right at the start, with the drums and lead guitars punching through shortly after instantly makes me think Snow Patrol. As soon as the vocals come out to play i think, Weezer, however its not long before there’s a mixture of the two to create a monster Frankenstein would be proud of. There’s a catchy tune, great vocals together with a real feel of indie rock.
The second track is called liar and just as i hoped the band stuck to what they knew and kept things simple, everything falls into place just like the first track. I love the solid drum beat throughout, sets the basis for the simple but effective guitar line, allowing the vocals to carry the baton home, i personally liked the guitar solo towards the end, shows that they have something different to offer, listen out for it.
Recognition keeps with the trend and you instantly find yourself nodding your head, despite the track having everything you would expect, i felt there was an opportunity for things to really take off and it just didn’t. However there is still a really bouncy tune and i liked the way it slowed down so you can hear the bass, as this can sometimes get drowned out.
Track four is called Burn, for me this track shows the band are capable of something a little bit heavier and different to the previous tracks. The vocals hit harder, making the tone of the track unlike the others, things have gone from Snow Patrol/Weezer to Nirvana-esque in the space of a few minutes and it works! Everything stays the same, nothing becomes over complicated and the track definitely benefits from it.
Seven Years is a complete contrast to Burn when everything is a lot heavier, id sit on a beach at sunset, with an ice cold beer, having put the world to rights with friends and listen to this. A gentle guitar solo welcomes you, instantly grabbing your attention, the vocals join the action complimenting the lone guitar superbly before the drums come to life. I loved everything about this track, despite it being so chilled and mellow there’s still a place for a guitar solo midway through, i think the song is layered perfect with the lone guitar, building up slowly to the vocals then the drums and then a guitar solo, by far my favourite song on the album.
Track Eight is called Nothing Like, it starts quickly, blasting you from the off with a rock cocktail of guitars, drums before the vocals are integrated. Again there’s a really catchy tune, with crisp vocals and it pretty much reverts back to what you would expect in previous tracks. However I got the sense of a more punk rock feel to the track which adds yet more depth to an already versatile album.
Track 10 is called Eyeliner, I wasn’t sure what was coming on this track as the whole album has kept me guessing. It starts with a excited guitar solo and soon the drums are punching along with the guitar, the vocals kick in creating a quick tempo similar to a fair few of the other tracks on the album. This is a real pick me up kinda track and would get me buzzing for a night out, definitely made me want to get up onto my feet with a beer.
Headrush is track 11 and aptly named at that! Punk rock lovers will like this track, there’s a real mash up of punk and Indy rock. This again creates a tempo nearing 100mph, coming towards the end of the album id have expected things to maybe ease up a bit, you couldn’t blame the guys for perhaps wanting to save their hands and fingers from even more bruising. I still like the vocals a lot and definitely compliment the foot tapping tune.
Track 12 is called How It Feels, this is the last track on the album and as I expected things get a whole lot slower and I liked that! However this is my least favourite track vocally. I think instead of keeping things simple, things got slightly complicated and for me it doesn’t work this time. The guitar solos work a treat and to be honest is a pretty fitting way to end an album I thoroughly enjoyed listening to, although not the complete package quite yet, I’m looking forward to hearing about this band in the future
Grey Goes Down from Nottingham have been described as ‘one of the most self motivated, bizarre and interesting alternative punk rock bands ever’ by The Fame Magazine, something I’m not sure how to take on! Sure self motivated and interesting are good things to hear, but bizarre…..well….we’ll see!
First track So Easy opens powerfully with distorted guitars, bass and a solid drum beat before kicking in with the vocals. Sounding akin to Nirvana at times, these guys are producing a sound which has been done before, yet it sounds fresh and new as they play it. Catchy from the moment the chorus kicks, you’ll find yourself singing along to ‘you’ll make it look so easy’ after the first round of hearing it – the simplicity is the key here and it makes it work so so well! At times this track doesn’t progress as you think it’s going to – in particular as the chorus kicks in so perhaps this is where the bizarre comment has come from, but to me it just adds another depth to the track which continues to make it appealing to listen to!
Second track, Argue With A Bullet, opens sounding like a well established Biffy Clyro track, using the guitar and vocals to push onwards in a catchy style before introducing the drums to the mix – I genuinely like this track as it’s incredibly catchy and big from the outset. As you listen to the band it’s hard to believe they’re not playing stages at festivals along with the likes of Biffy as their sound matches it perfectly, they’d be an idea support act. What’s more, this track shows off the bands ability as musicians, chucking a guitar solo in for good measure – but it also goes to show they’re not just a standard punk/rock/alternative band!
Final track A Thousand Times continues this theme, again sounding reminiscent of more established bands, the sound the band creates is simply enormous considering they’re only a 3 piece set up. Catchy again, this track is the perfect way to end the selection of tracks on the FB page as it seems to sum up everything before it, showing they’re capable of playing serious stuff whilst not taking themselves so seriously that they get caught up in their own egos.
Bizarre? I disagree, I reckon these guys are spot on with what they’re doing, and I think they’re doing it at the right time, the world is just about ready for music like this to explode again. More please, and that’s all I’ll say!
