Grown Up Avenger Stuff
I listened to the whole album/Ep, and I was pretty impressed. Over all they have a White Stripes fronted by the girl from the Cranberries feel to them. I know it's cliche to say that she sounds like the singer from the Cranberries, but it isn't just because the singer is Irish, every now and again she has a real similar voice - powerful when it needs to be, haunting when the lyrics calm down - all in all, an excellent voice, which is complemented by the accent..
Musically they are pretty good, but there is a distinct lack of guitar in most of the tracks. It's a bit of a shame, that you can't hear more of the guitar, but the drums are what clinched it for this band. A real White Stripes feel to the band - strong drums, good bassline, very good vocals.
Track 1 - really good start - starts out slowly and softly, but builds to a great crescendo with loads of energy. The singers voice is kind of haunting when she's singing the slower stuff, but has loads of energy when she gets going. The drummer is excellent, but the guitars are kind of a bit too background.
Going in to track two, after the energy of the second half of track one, I'd have preferred to keep that energy going with a really hard hitting heavy track. That said, track two is good, good music, good lyrics, but should be an end of album song. Once again, guitars are not altogether there being drowned out by the drums.
Trach 3 - very different, bit of a "muthas day out" feel to it with a groovy bassline. Strong energetic song, which would get a crowd going, good option for a single release to get the world interested.
The final track was a brilliant way to end the album, as it left me wanting to hear some more from them. These guys could have a good future with a bit of tweaking. Would love to hear more from them in the future.
All through the album I kept coming back to the thinking that this band sounds a lot like the White Stripes, mostly because the strongest music all through it was from the drums and the bass line with a powerful voice over the top. I'd love to be able to hear a bit more guitar, because it's there, but it's far too background. But that said, this band works, they're good, I'd love to hear more from them, and would be keen to see what else they can come up with.
Best tracks "The Man", "Do ya", and "Some of us". Worst track "The beat" - but even that's very good.
Score. 4/5
Would I listen to them again: Yes
Would I recommend someone else try them out - Definitely
Would I want to hear more: Yes
One major point - where are the guitars?? Turn down the drums a little turn up the guitar.
