Hatecore Inc
We were recently contacted by Kris from Hatecore Inc, a metal band from Akron over in the USA. Having already receieved some rave reviews about their album Rise Above All, I figured it was only right I too check out what’s on offer from these guys to see if I shared everyone’s opinion.
Opening the selection on the bands YouTube account with Nothing there’s an immediate sense that this is going to be one hell of a ride! The vocals are harsh against the backing heaviness, the guitars strong and the beat rolling from the moment the track kicks off, this isn’t music to sooth the soul, it’s music to kick someone’s ass to! Unrelenting from the moment the track begins until it comes to an end, what you’ve got here is a table spoon of Hatebreed mixed a pinch of Pantera funkiness, all blended together with a healthy dose of raw aggression – et voila! As an introduction to a band, all I can say is hell yes…..I’m going to like these guys!
I Am God once again follows the same lead, opening heavy and not giving you a moment to catch your breath before you’re once again thrown into a pit of pure devastation. What I really like is how there’s a really melodic lead line running over everything here, yet the hammering riffs turn it into a deranged heavy monster, the vocals harking back to early Rob Flynn style and the whole mix getting you out of your seat to jump around the house like a lunatic. Laughing and Collapsing is almost a shock then at first when it fades into being, but soon sets you straight once more. Kicking into a rolling moment of drums, hammering riffs and roaring, this is my personal favourite track from the selection as it’s quite simply stunning! Basic in its construction, this is one which on the live scene is going to get the crowds going mental, lapping up every single second of the track. Having said that, it’s nothing compared to Too Far Gone, another track built for the live scene which is going to have venues the world over left as nothing but dust following its performance. This is downright sludgy, hard hitting raw metal goodness, enough bass to overload the speakers and enough power to make you huddle in a ball – great stuff.
Sooner or Later comes in next, once again kicking into a funky guitar line built over some rolling drums, deep spoken vocals and heavy bass rhythms. The general theme running through all of these tracks is that these are built for the live scene, they work on an album but the true power is going to be unleashed once the band is put on a stage in front of you – something I need to get out there to see sometime! Blame is almost a shock as it comes in, opening much slower yet retaining that raw distortion which I’ve come to love so much, this is a track which seems to epitomize the sound these guys have got – it’s slow, heavy, raw and yet somehow melodic at times, something which is damned hard to achieve! Another one which is going to destroy your speakers as its played, I highly suggest you check this track out to get an idea of what’s going on here! Mind Control does pretty much the same thing, opening with the title spoken before kicking into a hammering riff, the track seems to build in your ears before finally breaking and kicking into another hammering mix of roaring vocals, bass heavy rhythms and all out power. There’s something familiar to the sound here but I can’t place it, all I know is that I need to see this band play, the songs are insane!
Bed Of Nails is another high point on the album, this time opening much softer and building up, almost acting as a moment of calm as it grows around you. I love the way the guitars seem to fade in and out as the track builds, the vocals coming in much softer yet the dark side of things being kept firmly in place so you know that something is coming! The ensuing riff which kicks in once again blasts away all the cobwebs and leaves you with no doubt that this band is out there to make a point, and make a point they’ve certainly done with me. I Kill You I’ll leave up to you to decide about (the video can be seen below), but from my perspective, this is another one which came close to being my favourite from the album, purely for the downright heavy funkiness which they’ve managed to achieve here. Finishing the album with Wish You Were Dead there’s a sense that this is going to be a band to watch out for, their sound is raw and powerful yet well thought out and put together, this track demonstrating that from start to finish.
Hatecore Inc were never going to be a soft band based on their name, but I didn’t expect what I heard as I clicked play. Their music is somehow advanced whilst keeping everything relatively simple, allowing the music to do the talking a lot of the time and keeping everything fully on the heavy side of the fence. If you want to hear a band which can produce ear shattering riffs, mindblowing drum fills and vocals which will grab you by the throat and throw you into a pit – this is it! All I ask for is a hard copy of the album and a ticket to see the guys and I’ll be one hell of a happy person – highly recommended!
