Hellvox
We were recently contacted by Argentinian band, Hellvox, to let us know about their tracks which they’ve been working on. Taking influence from the heavier side of music such as Thrash, Black Metal and Death Metal, but providing their own take on things, this promises to be one hell of a ride through their music! The band have also already achieved an opening slot with Carcass in 2008, tours in Chile and Argentina, and their bassist has been made a Spector Bass Artist – so they’re already getting out there ready to be seen. I figured this was a good moment to check out their stuff before they head to the studio once again to record their new LP, this time basing their music around the Japanese anime ‘Death Note’.
Opening with H.G.B, things get off to a dark and distorted start from the beginning, adopting a sound which is mind-blowingly heavy whilst somehow still managing to keep a firm sense of funk and melody running through things. Alternating between all out roaring and soaring singing over the chorus, this track seems to throw out contrast after contrast, always keeping the listener on their toes to see what’s going to come next. What I particularly like about the track as well is how high the bass is kept in things – it’s there in the mix to be heard and as such, sounds damned good! Wolves continues this theme of all out distortion from the off, this time throwing down into another mix of heavy bass lines, hammering guitars and pounding drums designed to get the pits moving. The mix here once again allows every single element of the band to be heard, crafting a sound which is going to make you want to see these guys live – something I really need to make sure I do!
R.A.C.S is another serious highpoint to make sure you check out, once again opening with a guitar line which borders on funky through the heavy bass which backs it up, once again forming a sound which incorporates all of their elements in balance and shows of their influences without ever copying them. What’s been most striking about the tracks so far is how unique the sound of these guys is, it’s clear where their influence lies but they use to make their own mind up on things. Post Trauma is another example of this time, opening dark and distorted, full to the brim with distorted guitar lines and rolling double bass moments. This is music which you can’t just sit back and listen to, it almost commands you to get up and start a pit where ever you are, almost infectious in its sound. Born In A Grave lays further testament to this, opening firmly on the thrash side of things and hurtling forwards at a pace which is going to get everyone within ear shot going mental. Once again crafting a track which is built for the live scene, this band seem to go from strength to strength on each track, always throwing something new out to be heard and always developing their sound.
Into The Realms Of Death continues the raw and distorted approach to proceedings, once again opening with a dark and distorted guitar line before launching you head first into a pit of quiet destruction. There’s a really ominous sense to this track, hinting at something more to come and not really showing you what it is until it’s upon you – once again forcing you to go mental and making you love every second of it. Closing the selection with Underworld Gates, there’s no doubt left by this point that this is going to be a band to keep an eye out for on the more extreme side of things. Heavy, distorted, dark and to the point from the word go, this is one last all out moment of pure aggression leaving you with a desire for more and making you want to see what else this band can do if they set their mind on it.
Hellvox have blown me away with the tracks on their MySpace page, showing their development and demonstrating that there are bands out there who are still producing insanely heavy and downright distorted stuff. From start to finish there are going to be moments here which scare you, make you want to dive in a pit and make you want to throw down where ever you are. In short, this is a band you need to make sure you check out!
