Hybrid Trend
Hybrid Trend is an alternative rock/Metal band from Leicester. Consisting of four lads and one lovely lady on vocals, the band has been together since September 2009. Their influences range from Muse to Metallica and Dream Theatre to the Foo Fighters. Taken from their Facebook page, 'The band offers a blend of the soft, melodic vibes of alternative rock with the power and ferocity of heavy metal',
I looked at the four tracks on the bands Facebook page and the first one I came across was Yellow Walls. It’s a no holds barred start as both drums and guitars thrust you into a spin. The tempo is fairly relentless, hurtling along at 100mph, however, there’s a still a catchy and upbeat feel to the riff. The introduction of the vocals slows the pace down slightly, giving you time to catch your breath ready for the next onslaught. The vocals do sound a little raw but also rather addictive. They seemed to hold me in my chair, until the track was done. The changes in tempo work well, the vocals suit the track and there’s a nice guitar solo thrown in for good measure.
Rage Quit has a completely different start compared to Yellow Walls. I was really glad to see a bit of variation as sometimes tracks can become a little predictable. A gentle guitar solo starts us off with soft, melodic vocals joining in soon after. There’s a distinct contrast in tempo as well compared to the previous track, however the chorus is a lot livelier and hard hitting. The drum beat is an ever present throughout; it feels like they are played with a real sense of purpose along with the different riffs banded about the track. There’s a great guitar solo towards the end of the track and I can tell the band like to make use out of as many influences as they can, rather than sticking to one genre.
One of the best starts to a track I have heard in a long time belongs to The Rhythm's Burning. A lone melodic guitar solo is the focus at the start, gentle strumming produces an atmospheric and mind twisting riff. Distorted guitars rise from the ashes, gradually drowning out the lone guitar, until they both meet in the middle and you are left with a cocktail of distorted guitars and meaningful drums. Vocals take over as the riff then fades away, these are getting better with every track I listen to, and if I’m honest the less heavy tracks suit the voice better. That signature guitar solo is back and adds a new dimension to the track. Personally this was my favourite out of the lot.
Lost In The Shadows was the final track I had the pleasure of listening to. With the previous two tracks being much more melodic, this one returns to its roots and starts off much more ferocious. The riffs and hooks on show are mind blowing; they really do take you on a rollercoaster ride of doom. The vocals to this track are good, they hold in line with the genre, aptly accompanying the solid and reliable drums and guitars. The tempo is fast but easy to follow along with; I can imagine this song being a real crowd pleaser at a live gig.
Well, all in all I like what I heard here. There’s a lot of variation, changes in style, tempo etc. and it all works well. Like I said the only criticism might be that sometimes the vocals don't work as well as they could with the heavier tracks, but saying that the last track was really good. Definitely a band on my hit list to see live and I hope to hear more from them in the future.
