Malevolence
When a band gets in touch who describe themselves as the Portuguese renowned masters of sonic extreme metal progression, I tend to sit up and take a little bit of notice! This is exactly what happened the other day when the chaps in Malevolence got in touch, letting us know about their spanking new video for Slithering and asking if we could take a sneaky peek! Stating that they need no introduction but that they were formed in 1994, these guys have been there and done it, worked hard to craft their sound and resulted in what we see here before us. As such, I thought the least we could do would be to have a listen for ourselves to see what we thought of what was going on!
Opening slowly, the track gets off to a slowish start, building on the sound and generating a sense of ominous foreboding. The whispered vocals in the background build into the track hammering onwards as it starts fully – turning from a quiet opening straight into a pummelling melee of hammering guitar lines, rolling drums and roaring vocals. The mix here is heavy for sure, the sort of thing which is going to get pits moving across the venue and leave no one untouched by the sheer power of their track. To me, musically there’s a real sense of Cradle Of Filth going on here, but with more venom and power through the vocals – almost taking an established genre and turning it into their own – setting the scene for Malevolence to be seen, heard, and feared the world over. The progressive elements are clear throughout as well, moving away from the simplistic approach and turning more towards the all out power approach, suggesting that we can expect seriously heavy stuff from these guys to come.
You can check out the video for Slithering for yourself below, and when you do I’m hoping you’ll agree that this is some pretty serious stuff. Sure this is heavy, but Malevolence seem to have taken that heavy power and crafted it into a track which is accessible and open, the sort of thing which will draw people in and make them want to hear more. Do I want to hear more, hell yeah I do – I’m thinking we need to be keeping an eye on this lot from here onwards!
