Masters Of The Radio - Wings
You may recall we featured Masters Of The Radio a while back, so when they got in touch letting us know about their new track Wings, I was looking forward to seeing what was on offer. As a band who fuse different approaches to form a sound which is entirely own, have they stuck with their approach or changed it for this latest outing?
Quite simply, they’ve stuck with it, fusing the electronic approach with that upbeat and in your face sound that we came across before. Once again managing to hark back to the glory days of the 80’s as well as the dark wave style stuff, this is a track which seems to showcase the style of the guys and let us know what to expect from their future releases. Throughout we’re shown their electronic influences, their ability to craft a catchy hook, and their ability to write a song which differs from one moment to the next. My only question would be whether it’s moving forwards or staying the same – their sound is one which suits them, but I could help but feel something was lacking – but at the same time, walked away knowing they’ve achieved what they set out to do.
It’s always a quandary when you walk away from a band unsure as to whether there should have been more involved in their track, and if I’m honest, I think that the sound that Masters Of The Radio have got is one which is their own, and one they should be proud of. Moving forwards I’d like to see more depth to things, so it will be interesting to see what we hear next from these guys!

Masters Of The Radio - NEW!
Having featured Masters Of The Radio before, we were over the moon when they got in touch recently about a new track, Powers Of Reality, to see what we thought. Having loved what they were doing before, we wanted to see what they’d been up to since we’d last spoken to them. One big change which Anthony told me about was how he’s changed it into a project which anyone can be involved with – a brave move but one which might just work!
Throwing straight into a funky mix of electronic sounds, the beat adopted here is one which is going to get you moving from the off, becoming increasingly bassy as it progresses and throwing elements out at you with each moment of the track. Keeping things electronic throughout, there’s a real sense of movement flowing throughout the track, the synth continually evolving to keep it interesting and all the time, increasing in depth and melody. The different elements which are faded in and out throughout keep this one which you’re going to be able to listen to over and over again, almost holding a Pendulum style within it but keeping changing to make sure it doesn’t get repetitive at any stage. Personally, despite my penchant for rock music I enjoyed this track, there’s just something about it which makes it accessible and easy to kick back to.
I love the idea of a project that people can be involved with, I think it’s an idea which means the resulting music will be varied and interesting, something which can often be lost. It takes a lot of nerve though, something which I’m sure Anthony holds and will be able to handle! Based on this track, things are looking pretty bright for the ‘band’ so it’ll be interesting to see where we go from here!

Masters Of The Radio
Masters of the Radio recently got in touch about their debut EP The Pleasure Age to see if we could get a review up and posted for them. Describing their style as ‘electronic’, I figured this could well be an interesting opportunity to hear something which I wouldn’t normally listen to.
Opening with Easy Now, you’re immediately confronted with a simple drum beat overlaid with electronic keys and soothing vocals. The tempo of the track is the key here, offering up a steady beat which is ample to move to, but somehow also offers you the chance to sit back and relax to the sound of it. Moving into a catchy chorus which will have you singing along after a couple of listens, this music is something which normally I wouldn’t go for, so it’s quite refreshing to hear. The keys in the background remind me of old skool computer games, there’s a serious similarity there to some of the old mega-drive games, bringing back memories of my younger years straight away! Catchy and chilled up until the final second, this is a solid opening to the EP without a doubt.
Close To You follows on, opening with a more bassy drum beat and more synth sounds over the top, this time bulked out with ‘bird’ style sound effects – the effect created is once again very chilled out and somehow intriguing. This track is more stereotypically electronic than the previous one, keeping the vocals low in the mix yet still right there whilst driving the track home with the pumping bass drum. Launching into another catchy chorus reminiscent of a track from the 80’s (it’s the drums which do it!) this track finds form, it’s not big or loud but something I can imagine working well at a party. The Last Feeling seems to completely contrast this at first, opening with keys and seeming to build into the drums, once again I found myself thrown back into the 80’s wanting to don a white suit, roll my sleeves up and get my hair into some form of a mullet. This track is once again catchy and far more electronic than the others so far, it’s a barrage of keys and styled vocals. I promise as you listen to this you’ll secretly enjoy it, it’s like harking back to days gone by and will bring all of those memories flooding back.
Final track Carribean Love Rise is a strange one to end the EP on, personally I reckon the previous track would have finished things off better. The track opens with synthed up steel drum sounds and a solid beat before layering in the vocals over the top. The track is catchy once again and holds all of the hall marks I’ve come to expect from these guys since beginning to listen to the EP, but it isn’t a closing track. Whilst it’s good and sticks to the bands style, it doesn’t make you sit back as much as the previous track, but that’s all down to the ordering of the track!
I came into Masters Of The Radio not really knowing what to expect, personally I’ve never gotten into electronic music and was a tad too young during the 80’s and early 90’s to fully appreciate it, however there’s definitely something here. I think with some reordering of the tracks and maybe a little more depth these guys could well be onto a winner – and I for one look forward to seeing what comes next!
