Meet Me In The Matinee - Full album review
This is a band that I reviewed a while back and one that I really enjoyed listening to. The guys were good enough to send me through their album all the way from the states and with a monstrous 17 tracks on board it were guaranteed to be something special.
I have had the album playing nonstop for a few weeks in my car, I wanted to get a proper feel to every track on offer. I had an idea of what I would be getting because of the tracks I had reviewed previously, however I had this sense of excitement about any new styles and variations the band might surprise me with. As an Indie/Alternative rock band producing a 17 track album, inevitably you are going to get tracks that sound fairly similar, luckily there aren't too many that clash here.
If you want an album where every track grabs your attention with punchy tunes, meaningful riffs accompanied by persistent drum beats, you're in the right place. There are many contrasts in terms of style of tracks, you have your punchy, fast paced and perhaps some would say bog standard Indie rock tracks. Then you have for example track eight, which is a chilled out acoustic piece, where it’s quite easy to lose yourself in the melodic vocals. Despite it being more chilled out, this song blends in well with the album and offers an alternative to the more familiar tracks.
Track fifteen was my favourite on the album. I loved everything about it and I was instantly hooked. The riff being thrown out is crazily addictive; the catchy yet devilish nature of it holds you in place, preparing you for the assault fast approaching from the vocals. As the vocals hit home, you soon realize that they are just as addictive as the flawless riff that continues to ring out in the background. The variations in tempo work really well and give the track an extra dimension; it never lets you settle in one place and was something that I really liked. Just as you think proceedings are coming to an end there’s a twist in the tail and things come back with a vengeance. The riff is a lot heavier and slightly quicker, the drum beat is more prominent and the vocals are rougher giving the track a more sinister feel.
So now to sum this album up. Like I said I spent a lot of time listening to this album and it didn’t get old. I was impressed with how every track managed to keep my attention and also show many different variations in tempo and style. It’s definitely a step up from the previous tracks I listened to and it’s always great to see a band trying to make it, making progress. This album has a lot to offer and I would recommend this to anyone.

Meet Me In The Matinee
Here we have another band from West Virginia, USA. The band was formed in 2008 and consists of five guys that are bringing an Indie/Alternative Rock sound to the table. Taken from their Facebook page they say, "Most of the songs range from multiple different genres, including Indie Rock, Punk, Pop Rock, Progressive, Classic Rock, and 60s pop. Being compared to the likes of Foo Fighters, Jimmy Eat World and Coheed & Cambria, MMITM is surely not just a one note band". That's me sold......
A sat back, plugged in and checked out the couple tracks the guys are offering on their Facebook page. Numero Un was called Sea Of Ignorance a high tempo guitar solo gets proceedings under way and straight away I felt the tension building as the addition of a punchy drum beat pushes the track along like an unstoppable freak of nature. As the vocals hit my ear drums I soon discovered a darker, punishing side to the song. This works well and was totally unexpected after such a bright start, the contrasts in the eerie vocals compared to the punchier guitar riff prove to me that these guys are more than a one note band. Three quarters of the way through the track the tempo slows, relinquishing the drum beat of its duty, allowing the vocals centre stage for a short time. It’s not long before normality is restored bringing the track to a close.
Flow Like Water was the second and last track on the list. I was really interested as to what I would be getting here in comparison to the previous song. An electrical sound sets the tone from the off. A much more melodic guitar riff gets involved, drifting along on the crest of a wave. There is still a dark, menacing feel to the track just like 'Sea Of Ignorance' and with the addition of the vocals they do little to squash this image. The tempo changes and slow, rhythmic riffs play on your mind, eating away at the back of your mind, taking you on some sort of emotional rollercoaster. This band are definitely more than a one trick pony, I can see the comparisons to bands such as Jimmy Eat World. I liked the last part of the track where the drum beat and guitar riff battles it out, trading blows, unwilling to back down. A top end to a well thought out and executed track.
Personally this band was right up my street and I liked both tracks on offer. There is variation and contrasting styles which I liked and the vocals are solid. I will definitely be looking out for more tracks from these guys and don't forget to check out the guys Facebook page and give them a like!
