Millsyeck
Big D from Noize Level Critical recently got in touch about a band called Millsyeck and recommended we check them out. Now, Big D has always been spot on with his recommendations so I thought it only right I take his word for it and see what was on offer. Coming from Dundee, this 4 piece describe themselves as a blues driven rock band offering storming live shows full of uplifting vocals and addictive guitar riffs – which sounds pretty cool to me! I checked out the bands Facebook page to see what was on offer.
Opening the selection with Looking Out For Number One you’re immediately struck by the depth of sound which these guys manage to create. Sludgy riffs hammer out over pounding drums whilst the bass roves around in the background, the whole melee is then brought together by soaring vocals which really set the tone of the track and push it forwards even further. The really striking thing about this track for me is how the vocals almost seem to contrast the music – the music is blues tinged and funky whilst the vocals are more old-skool rock, the combination creating a track which is not only funky but also raw and edgy whilst still retaining a catchy vibe, it’s pretty damned cool! Throwing riffs galore at the audience then chucking a solo of epic proportions in just for good measure, this track is full of moments which quite simply fill you with joy and faith that there is still bands out there doing good music well!
Second track Jumpin In The Grave follows on, sounds far more bluesey this time through the stylings of the guitar as the track begins. Adopting a simple yet effective pounding drum beat, the vocals take on a more gravelly approach this time and give this track a further edge – it’s like a local band playing a local pub in its energy yet like a well established band in the production they’ve achieved. Catchy once again, this track is another example of how accomplished these guys are at what they do, it’s quite simply a track which you can’t listen to without moving in some way, really a great way to follow on from the first one and another taster which just makes you want to hear some more!
Final track Not What You See comes in at number three on the page, opening like a well crafted rock track straight off and then hammering home this message as the vocals almost fade into being. Once again this track brings back the catchy and funky approach, as before it’s impossible not to move along with the music as it’s just so damned funky! Sounding almost like Bon Jovi in some ways, there’s a lot here which is very very well done, again giving the band that accomplished sound which they seem to have captured on their recordings. I can imagine this also being a great track on the live scene, it’s got that edge which you know live audiences are just going to lap up and love every second of! As the track comes to a close my only complaint is that there’s only 3 tracks here, and I want to hear more!
Strange name Millsyeck, and to be honest I don’t really get it but hey, with music like this on offer what does a name matter?! This is music which you want to move to, it’s the sort of thing you put on before going out so you can strut around your house looking like a loon but loving every second of it! I’ve been well and truly pulled in by these guys and think this music is something which a lot of people out there will love if they’re given the chance – highly recommended!
