Ministry Of Love
We were recently put on to Ministry Of Love from Las Vegas by Damon from Inner Light Agency, seeing as all of his recommendations to date have been pretty spot on I thought it only right that I have a listen to see what was on offer!
Obituary fades in slowly, softly building over clean guitar and a solid bass line all backed by a solid drum beat. Kicking in with the vocals, a sludgy but refined guitar line backs up the well formed female vocals. Almost spitting the vocals at first, the track takes on a sense of pace without actually powering on too fast before kicking in to a solid and catchy chorus. Straight off you realise that this is a band who know how to put together a track and perform it, the production is excellent and the sound created is one which sounds incredibly professional and experienced. Catchy throughout, this is a track which crosses the rock genre into mass music appeal, I can see these guys being pretty big based purely on this track alone.
Third Time’s a Charm follows on, once again starting off deceptively quiet before kicking into a solid riff backed by an almost jazz like drum beat. Roving around in the background the bass is still there, always good to be able to hear the bass in a mix! Once the vocals kick in and the track takes form you’re again treated to a catchy and refined track which wouldn’t be out of place on anyone’s MP3 player. As the track fades out and Fire Away kicks in the pace seems to gather somewhat, bringing back in that distorted guitar line and underpinning it with a lead line. All of this continues to back the vocals, again creating that sound which wouldn’t be out of place on any of the mainstream TV channels like Kerrang or Scuzz. Once again catchy, this is another example of why this band deserve to be better known, they’ve got all of the key elements there and just need to push it into the spotlight!
Yours Truly follows on, slowing things down to a sludgy grungy sound topped off with emotional lyrics. Kicking into another catchy chorus this band show no signs of slowing down, creating a unique take on rocky/grungy music. What really struck me here was the chord progression, it doesn’t do what you expect it to do meaning you’re always kept listening to find out what’s coming next. By the time Slow Your Roll kicks in I’m wondering what is coming up next, and it’s good! This track takes on the more punky edge of their music and pushes it forward, topping those distorted guitars with the vocals and backing it all with a solid rolling drum beat then adding in some gang vocals for good measure. This track is probably my personal favourite from the selection as it seems to show off a darker side to the band, it’s good to hear!
Final track Neon White Girls opens a lot funkier than the other tracks, using the bass to its full potential to kick in. As the guitars kick in sludgy and dirty again, the track takes form and powers onwards to catchy goodness. It’s striking that a band can create a sound which is raw and refined at the same time then make it catchy, it’s really cool to hear!
I’ve said it before and I’m sure I’ll say it again, but I’ve never been sure of female fronted bands. It’s not a sexist thing but often I find the two just don’t work for me. In the case of Ministry of Love though they’ve got it spot on and created a sound akin to older No Doubt stuff crossed with more modern takes all with a funky almost ska punk edge in the bass, the result is epic.
