Mutemath played to a capacity audience on 19th March 2013 at Astor Theatre Perth, supported by Big Scary.
Big Scary performed to their usual excellent standard, no doubt converting some of Mutemath’s followers into their own.
The demographic that follow Mutemath are as diverse as their music, they cover several elements from many different genre’s. Their fans range in age and cover both sexes equally.
They are a non-pretentious trio, joined on stage by a guest bass player/percussionist. Their arrival onto the stage at Astor was in a surprise to their fans as they walked in single file banging drums from the front of the theatre and through the crowd. The song choices and strategically ordered set list led the night and the crowd into a wonderfully enjoyable musical experience. Front man Paul Meany has energy to burn on stage and it not shy of demonstrating his cool dance groove. Although the band do not engage in much chatter with their audience, the connection is solid. Musically these guys are gifted and confident, that shines through, as they all seem to take turns on various instruments. Throughout the 2 hour set there are several long instrumental journeys, the band are successfully experimental with their craft. When you watch them it is obvious that they live and breathe music in all its forms, and they make it look natural and easy.
The crowd’s smiles and passionate call backs created a contagious atmosphere, Drummer Darren performed the whole show with his cans gaffer taped under his chin, reminding me of a rugby player in a scrum, more evidence of the genuine nature of this band, functionality before glamour. We were treated to a couple of new releases, which were instant crowd pleasers.
The encore saw Paul surf the crowd on a huge cushion/airbed and perform a song from within the crowd at one with the bands admirers. Darren did a small drummer solo with a couple of snares whilst standing on top of the Paul’s well travelled and no doubt invaluable organ. Multi talented guitarist Roy played his various guitar pedals just to prove that anything goes with this band. Overall a great show that lifted the spirits of everyone that attended.
