Nephilim
NephiliM from the Isle of Wight were good enough to get in touch about their music to see what we thought. I settled down to have a listen to see what could come up with about it.
This Is The Time opens big and loud, layered vocals and distorted guitars all combined over a simple drum beat building up the proper opening of the track. Taking on a funky edge through the guitars, the track breaks and the vocals tear into you, all supported by rolling drums and a solid bass line. What really struck me about this track is the pace at which it hurtles forwards, continuing on its insane journey from start to finish using ever element of the band to power onwards. At the same time, the musicianship is evident throughout, using a solo to break the track as well as break downs and the continually rolling drums.
A Light opens with some picked lead lines laden with near harmonics, soon backed by a solid drums beat and those ripping vocals again. This track takes on a different approach this time at times bringing in a cleaned up vocal line behind the roaring to add a new depth. My question here though is whether it works fully. I can see what they’re trying to do but I’m not sure it works fully, personally I think they’d be better off sticking with the roaring – the clean vocals seem to clash more than support. That said, the break down on this track is immense and had me nodding along pretty much as soon as it kicked in.
The Victim opens with some haunting echoey lines, laden with feedback at times seeming to build up towards what is to come. As the track kicks in with spoken vocals and a building guitar line, the pace is once again renewed at insane paces, using rolling drums, mixed vocals, differing guitar lines and gang vocals all adding a depth to the track. At times chaotic, this track contains all of the elements the band has shown off so far on their other tracks combined to form this loud monster of a track, it’s probably my favourite from the selection.
Final track We Are The Fallen opens crunchy and heavy straight away, using rolling drums and pounding guitars to push the track forwards. As the vocals kick in using that clean spoken line again before the roar, the track takes on a haunting edge once again, turning this into serious fear as the roaring kicks in properly. This mix accompanied by the guitars, roving bass and rolling drums add something to this track, making it dark and deeper than those which have come so far. The lead line backing the whole mix adds further depth to things and makes this track one which I think is accessible to a fairly wide audience.
In all, NephiliM have formed a good basis for themselves here, producing some good tracks which I’m sure with some refinement will do really well. The guys in the band must remember that they’re still young so have still got a way to go, but they’re on the right tracks for now!
