No Room To Breathe

Ed from No Room To Breathe got in touch the other day, letting us know about their EP to see what we thought of things. Formed in 2009, the band have already achieved acclaim on the live scene, performing with the likes of Puddle Of Mudd, Shinedown, Powerman 5000 and Sevendust, showing that there’s an audience out there for them and that maybe, now is the time for them to really break. Due to be heading to the studio to record in January, the guys have already been out trialling new stuff with their audiences, and so far are receiving some pretty damned good feedback. On top of this, the guys sent me through a link to their EP so I hit play and prepared myself for what I was about to hear!
Opening with Bleeding Again we’re not given a lot to go on initially, the sound of the track simply growing through guitar lines as it begins to build, a sense of power and melody forming around it and luring you to peek in to see what’s going on. As the track fully breaks it all becomes clear and we’re tossed into melee of drum lines, bass rhythms, powerful vocals and soaring guitar lines, the mix forming something which is both upbeat and powerful at the same time. Catchy from the off, this is a track which is going to realise its full potential on the live scene where there’s a crowd to sing along and to feed off of the band, it’s a mix which people are going to connect with and want to get involved with. Lap Dog continues this idea and once again, leads us through the introduction to the track to something upbeat, energetic and hard hitting. There’s something about this track which somehow sounds familiar, using the elements of the band to craft a sound which combines heavy assed riffs and vocals with moments of calm and reflection, showing that it is possible to do both, and do them well.
Unable marks a slight change in the progression of the album, this time moving towards the softer side of the spectrum to get things going, forming a sound which is calm, deep and reflective to get the track in motion. Adding in some calming and serene vocal lines, this track initially seems a million miles away from the upbeat and energetic moments of earlier in the EP, yet it still manages to pack the same punch. The chorus is the key to this track, forming something which will get people signing along and feeling a connection to the track, something which stands them in good stead moving forwards. As if to show further that this is a band who are capable of doing different styles, Public Light follows on with a RHCP style bass line before once again descending down into the raw and aggressive pit of all out devastation. Another track which seems to have been crafted for the live scene, there’s something powerful about this track which is going to lure you in, get you moving and leave you with no doubt that this is a band to make sure you check out!
Moving back to the softer side of things once again for Clinch, it’s clear throughout that this is an EP which moves from moment to moment, each track coming as a surprise after the previous and showing that these guys are capable of turning their hand to whatever they want to. Sounding akin to the likes of Incubus on this track, there’s a real sense of the upbeat, a sense of sunshine and a sense that this is going to be one of the tracks they get known for. There’s a real ‘radio’ quality about this track, standing it out as the sort of thing which will get some airplay and get them noticed. It’s only left to No More to close the EP, leaving on a heavy and groove orientated note and showing once again that there’s more to this band than meets the eye. This final track was one of my personal favourites from the EP, showing off the sort of track which is going to get venues pumping and secure these guys a slot on the must see live list of bands!
I think it’s hard to not judge a band when you see who they’ve supported, especially with a group like this who have already achieved so much, but equally, I think it’s important to take things at face value. What you’ve got with No Room To Breathe is a band who understand their music and as such, are able to offer up a diverse selection of tracks on one 6 track EP. What you’ve got here is a showcase of their styles, showing that they’re a force to be reckoned with, and a band who could well be destined for much bigger things.
