Open Addiction
Open Addiction recently got in touch to let us know that after a short hiatus, they’re back together and once again putting some music together. Having shared the stage with the likes of Drowning Pool, Korn, Black Label Society and (one band who I’ve never seen but pray to god I one day get to) Saliva, these guys have already established themselves as a force to be reckoned with – so what’s the music like?
Left Me Broken opens the selection on the bands FB page and immediately demonstrates why they’ve been so successful in the past. The drums roll around underneath the disjointed yet effective guitar line whilst the vocals are kept clean, allowing them to soar over everything and keep the track melodic whilst still insanely heavy at times. The contrasting vocal lines bounce around and further develop this track, adding an extra depth which you don’t normally expect to hear from a band who call themselves a Hard Rock band. Throughout the track there is a real emotionally charged element to things, it’s a painful tail of being left broken and being forgotten, yet it’s also really accessible and the sort of thing you can crank on and sit back to. I can only imagine how this track is reacted to on the live scene as personally, I think it’s going to slay the live crowds and firmly establish these guys as a force on the live scene.
Over Now seems almost contrasting after the first track, opening at much the same pace but this time much more laid back and emotional. The vocals are once again full of pain as the guitars are kept low in the mix to allow things to naturally develop. Cries of don’t back down soon echo around before launching into the chorus section of ‘it’s over now’ which is sure to have live crowds singing along. What I really like on this track is how at first listen it sounds relatively simple, but when you really listen you discover all sorts of new elements in the background, all of which further propel this song into being something much bigger than the simplistic hard rock label would suggest. As the track fades and Personal Savior comes into being, everything once again resumes the rolling heavy pace which was set early on, the drums, bass and guitar all complimenting each other perfectly and pulling you into the track to listen harder. The vocals are once again soothing yet charged, creating another track which is going to engage you and not let you go until the second it comes to a close. The chorus is once again catchy and is sure to be one which you’ll find yourself singing along to, really a very well written track over all.
Final track on the bands selection on their Facebook page is Falling From Grace, another more laid back track at first in the performance, but the vocals take on a different edge here, almost sounding more powerful than before. Kicking into the track fully, the guitars once again resume their distorted approach to proceedings and you’re thrown into a melee of hammering guitar lines, soothing vocal lines and the pounding bass and drum combination. Throughout this track once again you’re kept engaged by the vocal line and soon find yourself wondering why you’ve not heard of these guys before!
When I first read the information on these guys I was really shocked to see who they’d shared the stage with, but having heard their sound I can see why they’ve achieved what they have! If their new stuff matches this then I have no doubt that once again these guys are going to be out there supporting big name bands and developing their own following – all they need is to stick to their recipe and they’ve got to be on a winner!
