Our People Vs Yours
SAN PR recently got in touch and put us on to Our People Vs Yours, a 5 piece Metal Core unit from Essex. Due to release their EP in November this year, this was an opportunity to hear some music before general release, which is always somewhat of an honour. Having already scored themselves a slot on the Red Bull stage at Hevy Festival, these guys are on the road to success – why not tag along with them!? (Please note - the tracks are not reviewed in order of the EP - the correct order should be 1). Lights, 2). Ariha, 3). I've Had Better Days, 4). In Unity - Apologies for any confusion caused below.)
Opening with Ariha, the pace is immediately set fast and exciting before launching into the vocals with a call to ‘stand up’. Matching the roaring vocals with equally soaring guitar lines, everything lowers down a notch into a melodic section before kicking back in with a climbing bass line, solid drum section and those pumping guitars leading the charge. More melodic than you tend to come across with a lot of metal-core bands, this track has so many elements combining that on first listen you won’t know where to focus. Lead lines pluck around in the background, the drums offer a solid beat to lead the way, the bass line roves around and the guitars take the over all lead, but the vocals steal the show. Powering up throughout the track, this is one track which will make you sit back, listen and then listen again to make sure you’ve heard every little element of it – one hell of a way to open an EP. Brining in some dual layered vocals towards the end before kicking into a heavier section to finish, what on earth are they going to follow this with?
In Unity answers that question, a track offering up a syncopated beat, some roaring vocals and more of those awesome guitar lines. Kicking in powerful but always keeping things melodic, this is another track which is simply breath-taking. Offering a lead line up behind the vocals and rhythm section it also demonstrates that this is a band who are able to do what they do, understand how to craft a track and most importantly, how to play their instruments. Soaring vocals continue to lead the way in this track, achieving some pretty amazing high notes yet never once losing their power, another first class track. This is without a doubt my personal favourite from the EP, there’s something about this track which really hammers home to you how good these guys are. As it fades and I’ve Had Better Days kicks in though everything picks up a notch once again. Offering up some funky guitar lines behind the vocals, this is a track which demonstrates the rawer edge of the band. Heavy and solid throughout, the guitars take on a sludgy sound, backed by rolling drums and that bass line. Breaking down to more melodic elements in the chorus, this track is a live anthem in the waiting – you only need to listen to it to understand why I say that!
Final track Lights is a perfect ending to an awesome EP, opening with sludgy guitars, a lead line, pounding drums and that awesome bass which has been so prominent throughout, the whole thing kicks into an almost funky guitar line which is sure to have people moving along to it. Building for a while before kicking in with the vocals, all of a sudden you’re thrown into a pit of roaring vocals, soaring intricate guitar lines and rolling drums and heavy bass, it’s a mash up which will leave you thinking one simple word – wow. Adding in contrasting sections of cleaned up vocals and harmonic melodies, this track is a prime example of a band poised on the edge of big things, it’s quite simply awesome. Never slowing or tiring, this is a track which you will revisit again and again before begging them to play it on the live scene.
I’ve come across quite a few metal-core bands since starting up the site, and generally I’ve liked a lot of the stuff they’ve produced. These guys are producing music with their own take on it though, adding in an extra spoonful of raw energy but balancing it out with harmonies and melodies, the outcome is sensational. I can’t wait until this EP is released so you can all hear it – you’re in for a treat.
