Prescient - Live at the Rosemount, Perth

Picture
Prescient @ The Rosemount Perth

Melanie Scrafton

3 piece Perth band, the ‘Prescient’ formed in 2009, with members Drew Shepherd - guitars, David Gee – bass and Taz Buckle– drums. I caught up with the band at the Rosemount Hotel in Perth on March 9th.

The guys were playing support for Tangled Thoughts of Leaving. The set started with the thunder of drums, before the guitars came in with a story of what seemed like frustration and emotional tension. If you don’t know Prescient they are a instrumental heavy rock band.

They really are something completely different and unique. They played a total of 5 tracks starting with ‘For those who are not familiar’ –Loud, raw and completely engaging, each track is a trip through many emotions, as they lift and calm the listener. I have never seen a crowd react to heavy rock in the way they do to Prescient, usually you would see heads and bodies bobbing in time with the drums. Not the case with Prescient the crowd stand virtually motionless caught up and consumed by what they are hearing. The tunes remind you of soundtracks with out the visuals.

Second epic track was ‘Phases of Penumbra’ part 1 and 2 back to back. Drew is at one with 8 string Schecter, flawlessly performing vigorous and dramatic riffs, it’s as if you can almost hear the trash type vocals within the tune except there are none! Next came ‘The constant’ complicated and vigorous bass and guitar stand out in this searching tune.

‘Conductive Cell’ and ‘Foresight’ closed their set. My conclusions are this band really does not require a vocalist, it’s the intense musical journey that make the band so exciting. The sound at the Rosemount was good, loud with out distortion so you could completely appreciate the Prescient experience.
