Red Mist
We were recently contacted by Bored Stiff Records, a label responsible for some awesome bands down here in the South West of England, Red Mist being one of them. Ever the obliging types I thought I’d best sit down and have a listen to what this Exeter based 4 piece had come up with.
Opening with Disturbing Realisation you’re thrown into a melee of strings, rain sound effects and soft guitars, all very soothing and quite the opposite of what I’d expected from these guys. Melodic and harmonic, the track builds as the perfect opening for Prophets Of Suffering, launching onwards with roaring guitars and vocals all underpinned by rolling drums and a sludgy bass line – this is more what I was waiting for. The soothing sounds of the intro soon fade into the after life and you’re left with a raw, unrelenting assault on your ear drums, all pieced together to perfection creating a sound which is both melodic and insanely heavy at the same time. Throwing in a guitar solo of epic proportions just to make sure you’re fully convinced of how good these guys are, the track powers onto its conclusion – that’s how to begin a selection of tracks!
Slaughter House follows on, opening with sound effects before kicking into a sludgy guitar riff and some more of those rolling drums, the sound created matches the spoken vocals and creates a sound which will make you check that you’re not listening to a more well known band. Launching into an insanely heavy section featuring some awesome riffs and different layers of vocals, this track is heavier than the last track yet still retains that melodic edge which was so prominent before. As it fades and Crack Addict Logic kicks in, once again the guitars take the lead and the drums pick up their galloping pace. The vocals take on a more guttural edge in this track adding even more to the already heavy track. Somehow becoming almost catchy as the track moves from broken down sections into the faster paced rolling sections, this track demonstrates a band who are able to write a track and make it insanely heavy whilst not compromising on their musical ability. If you want to question this, just listen to the middle section of the track when everything breaks down!
War Drums is the next track on the FB selection, opening with a blast from the drums, a sludgy riff and a lead line all working together to build up to the entrance of the main part of the show – those awesome roaring vocals. Picking up the rolling pace where they left off, this track is another example of how to write a metal track, and one which I suspect will be an anthem on the live scene! If I’m right in my thinking, then Locusts must cause a riot when it’s played live, it’s immense! Kicking in fast and never really pulling back from the edge, the drums and bass steal the show on this track. Keeping everything high in the mix means you can hear everything these guys do, and it’s all good! Pounding and heavy from the outset, this is probably my favourite track here, there’s something about it which grabs you by the face and pulls you into the track!
Against The World takes on a more hardcore approach in the way it’s written, pounding drums leading the way whilst the guitars riff around on top of them and roaring powerful vocals lead you through. Breaking down into sections which are certain to have circle pits moving, this track isn’t for the feint hearted, but if you like your music hard and heavy, this is for you! As it fades and Insecurity You Have To Pay for kicks in you realise that this is a band who can play their instruments and also write tracks which are face meltingly heavy whilst somehow staying easy to listen to. Another track which is sure to slay crowds on the live scene, this is one hell of a track from the minute it starts to the second it finishes.
Final track Full Circle does just that, brings the selection of tracks to a close as it began, hard, heavy, fast, dirty, sludgy, rolling and insane. This track kicks in slower but holds all of the venom and malice of the tracks which have come before it, continuing the theme set throughout all of the tracks so far.
Red Mist are a band who I really need to get out and see live, their sound is so massive and heavy that it has to be something which will absolutely kill on the live scene. Their tracks are heavy and hard hitting yet somehow always retain the melodic edge which can so often be lost. I hope to hear a lot more from these guys and sincerely hope they stick to the recipe they’ve worked out because it’s a winner!
