Session
Formed in 2009, Fresno based Session members Jordan and Patrick have been playing music as a group since high school, finally recruiting Jeremiah and Codie to complete the Session line-up. Stating that they’re no ordinary rock band, I figured it was only right to check out what was going on and what their music sounded like!
Soundwall certainly suggests good things, opening with a reflective and quiet guitar line before shifting into some atmospheric style stuff, all mixing together to form a sound which is both intriguing and inviting. Refusing to opt for a simplistic sound, the over all feel behind the track here is one of laid back power, hinting that there’s more to come but not giving in to the temptation to go for it. This held back approach works to create a sound which lures you in and makes you want to hear more, not following the convention set down by other bands and instead, carving their own path into things. A.M. Love follows on from this idea, launching into a rock track tinged with a hint of almost country style stuff, before reverting to a typical UK indie scene style riff. It’s striking because you don’t tend to hear this sort of sound coming out of the US too often, so to hear it now is pretty fresh and new. The laid back rhythms of this track certainly show that this isn’t an ordinary rock band, it’s got that laid back out there approach, and it’s cool to hear!
Spin Cycle seems to follow the same conventions, relying on the bass to open things for the track before continuing the atmospheric and deep rhythms of the earlier tracks. The vocals are powerful over the chilled out backing music, adding in a further sense of contrast to the mix and forming a track here which is going to work both on record and on the live scene. What’s most striking though is the amount going on in the track, when you first listen to it you think it’s quite simple, but when you really listen you realise that there’s a hell of a lot more to the track, a lot in the background which bolsters everything and makes it even more interesting. Gone leads us up to the final moments of the tracks from the band and does it in style, crafting a smooth and chilled out sound which is going to be perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Chilled out, reflective and atmospheric, this is the sort of band you want to hear playing on a summers day, giving you enough power to keep you happy but enough of the chilled out vibe to make you simply kick back and relax.
Session seem to be an undiscovered talent, crafting tracks which are going to appeal to a cross section of fans of different genres of music. There’s the chilled out moments which will appeal to the more commercial fans, and the more upbeat moments which will get the rock fans involved more seriously. In all though, this is music which doesn’t need to be pigeon-holed or compared to other bands, it simply stands alone as music which is going to brighten up your day, then your week, month and year. All I know is that I want to hear more, and a copy of the album when it’s done!
