Shadows Lie Within
I was recently put onto York based Shadows Lie Within, just before my computer went down! What a lot of people don’t know is that my laptop actually went down about 20 seconds after pushing play on their first track, so technically, their music is so damned heavy it destroyed my computer! All joking aside, read on to find out why you should check these guys out!
Shadow Of My Memory opens by fading in, building up, making you wait a little while before kicking in and ripping your face off, this is full on stuff! Rolling drums pummel your ear drums whilst guitars riff all over the place and roaring vocals hammer home the point, this is the musical equivalent of warfare! Whilst remaining heavy throughout, the band achieve a sense of melody in the music as well, using the guitars and bass to rove up and down the necks creating a pumping yet catchy riff throughout, one word springs to mind – awesome. This assault doesn’t ease off until the track ends, breaking down into an even heavier section midway through the track, this band are on a path to show people how metal should be done, and they’re doing it well!
Moving into second track, Ranks Of The Damned, the lead guitar takes over proceedings to build into the track, using the drums to set the pace this track evolves from a slow build up into another full on attack. Kicking in with some insanely fast drums, roaring vocals and those awesome guitars, this track takes the first track and betters it, adding in a new level – speed. Fast, heavy and in your face throughout, this track is pure brutality once again tinged with harmony and melody, testament to this is the mid section where everything breaks down and singing is brought in, the contrast created is something which catches you off guard but makes you think – wow, these guys know what they’re doing. As the track ends and Untitled kicks in, the pace slows to a rolling drum beat, adding in a funkier edge to things. Again the vocals are unrelenting and the guitars powerful, but the drums give this track a more jumpy edge, it’s full on but something which you can see yourself moving to live. This all changes though as everything is broken down and all hell breaks lose, the track takes on an insanely dark and heavy approach which will sit you on your ass and question what the hell is going on, before moving back to the original sound. If you haven’t guessed it by now, these guys like to create songs which make you think, make you listen – this isn’t just metal, it’s like some super human form of it which has been genetically modified and combined with every genre of metal out there, it’s something to behold when you hear it!
Final track Now Is Not Forever opens heavy again, rolling but syncopated to kick off using the drums and guitars to build up into the track. As the vocals kick in the track takes on the form created so far, once again heavy and unrelenting but accessible. What really struck me about this track though is the broken down melodic section, the vocals fade into the background and you’re treated to some heavy guitar over dubbed with some awesome lead lines underpinned with those rolling drums. In all, there are so many elements going on here that you have to listen to it a few times just to get a handle on it.
Shadows Lie Within are a band who I think could well be headed somewhere, they’re the sort of band who on the live scene would obliterate venues and leaves audiences talking about it for years to come. Their song writing ability is evident in their music, something which I’ve marvelled at every time I’ve listened to it. I sincerely hope they stick with this recipe they’ve got as for me, it’s a winner and I hope to hear a lot more of it!
