Silent Nation
Midlands based Silent Nation are another band which were brought to my attention by Big D, stemming from the Midlands and citing their influences as the likes of Foo Fighters and Soundgarden. Being a big fan of both of those bands I thought I’d see what Silent Nation have on offer!
Loaded Gun opens with a sludgy guitar lick before the drums and rhythm section kick in creating a sound far beyond what I had expected. Sounding almost funky at first, the vocals kick in and straight away the influences become clear, this is solid rock with a hint of grunge thrown into keep things moving, then a little tit bit of Nu-Metal in the chorus where everything speeds up and pushes onwards. What I particularly liked about this track was the middle section where everything is broken down then one by one each element re-emerges, building up to a point where everything kicks back in stronger than ever.
As the track finishes and The First Time kicks in, the drums once again become the driving force behind the track before all of a sudden the guitar line takes the lead backed by the bass and this funky assed riff emerges. Layered vocals kick in creating a haunting edge over the music, the sound created is reminiscent of older rock yet manages to sound fresh and new – it’s something pretty special that’s been created here. The chorus kicks in catchy as ever and WILL have you singing along after a couple of listens! This track is yet another sign that the band have listened to their influences and drawn upon them to help them create their own sound without allowing themselves to copy or reproduce things which have already been done.
Final track Superman Cape is a far funkier track than the ones before it, opening with a wah laden guitar before an Audio-Slave like riff kicks in and leads the track onwards. Again the drums seem to be a law unto themselves in the back ground, offering rolls here there and everywhere yet somehow managing to maintain their sense of timing, the mash up created somehow manages to work and you end up with the unique sound I’ve been raving on about. Again the chorus speeds things up a little and adds some more power to the track – this is another example of a track which leaves you wanting more.
I’m always wary of bands who cite major bands like the Foos or Soundgarden as influences as those are big shoes to fill. What I like though is that Silent Nation have taken their influences and used them to help them develop their own sound, something which doesn’t often happen. The sound they’ve managed to create is unique in its own right and one which I would say they should consider a success!
