The guys from Silent Resistance recently got in touch and sent through a copy of their latest offering, A Thousand Voices , to see what we thought. Saying that they offer ‘crushing riffs and driving rhythms’, this 5 piece from Leicester are out to gain recognition across the midlands and the UK and to get their tunes stuck deep in the heads of every single man, woman and child – so, I figured I’d see how they were getting on with things!
Prelude opens proceedings and sets the tone straight off, dark rain noises echo with a bassy undertone, the whole mix building into the album and creating an ominous feeling of what is to follow. The synth effects further bolster this and really build into the first track Death Stare, grabbing you by the face and pulling you in. Funky guitar rhythms take over the lead over a bass heavy backing, the drums kept slow and relatively simple to allow the track to fully resonate into your head. As the vocals come into being they adopt an almost spat out approach, almost continuing that funky sound started by the original guitar work. What I really like about the track is how simple it is, there’s not too much going on so every single element of the band can be heard fully, the bass is heavy, the drums pounding and the lead snippets elevate the track from the sludgy depths, it’s a great start to an album for sure! Throughout the track there are little changes which add something further to it, whether it’s the layered vocals or the differing guitar lines, it all just works to create a great song.
The Game follows on, opening bass heavy once again but adding in a dark but melodic guitar line over everything. The tone remains pretty dark throughout but the sense of melody allows you to connect with the track, the different vocal levels working to further develop this further. The guitar work is pretty striking here as well, throwing in a fast paced riff to add a sense of pace to the track whilst still keeping the restrained melody firmly in place. Make sure you listen out for the solo on this track as well, seriously well accomplished stuff. It’s almost a shock then when Make Or Break comes into being, a track which opens much harder than the ones before it but still fits perfectly into the album as a whole. Pounding riffs take the lead here over a solid drum beat, the mix forming one which you want to see live, just to witness the sheer power which this track seems to suggest these guys have got. The chorus is once again full of melody but this time with a serious dose of distortion also thrown into the mix, just to make sure that metal desire is fixed. Again there is a seriously accomplished mid section to this track, the rolling drums accentuating the off beat guitar work and creating a sound which is not only hard hitting, but also seriously melodic at the same time.
Silent Resistance is soon upon us and comes in as another shock, this time reverting back to the chilled out dark approach, keeping the bass firmly there to be heard and enjoyed. The vocals are the real show stealer on this track though, alternating between relatively soft and soothing through to powerful gravelly vocals through the chorus section, awesome stuff. I also really like the way the guitars seem to rove around the necks and create a sound which can at times be hard to follow, but allows the track to move away from a simplistic rock tag. Demons (They Come For Me) is relatively the same as the last track, opening dark and clean yet keeping that sense of melody firmly in place to draw you in and make you listen harder. Keeping things clean, there’s a real sense of power throughout this track, but not power in the sense of adding reverb to things, just power in the writing of the track and the performance, something which I think is going to be fully realised on the live scene. This is quite possibly my favourite track from the album I think, I like the way it roves from clean to understatedly distorted, these guys know what they’re doing and do it well!
Closing the album with Echo, you can’t help but feel that the band are finishing by showing what they can do if they want to, this is a far more metal track than the ones before and demonstrates the heavier roots of the band. Hammering drums, pounding guitar lines and intricate lead snippets all form a track which you can’t help but turn up loud then jump around like a loon to. If this is what they’re capable of then my god, I can’t wait to hear what comes next!
Silent Resistance have crafted an album which is difficult to pigeon hole, which has to be a good thing. The music doesn’t follow the conventions of any other band but instead allows the bands own style to filter through, avoiding similarity and creating a sound which is unique and fresh. Energetic, refined, well written and well produced, this is an album which shows a band who have a lot of influences, but are able to manipulate those influences into a shape which they want it to take, it’s quite something to take on board. What ever comes next, make sure it follows this theme, and then get me a copy!
